Description:

The church of Ateneo of San Basso was built in 1076 in honor of San Basso...

The church of Ateneo of San Basso was built in 1076 in honor of San Basso and is one of the oldest churches in Venice. After the fires of 1105 and 1661 the church was built again. The simple elegance and classic admired today is probably attributable to Baldassarre Longhena, who worked at the time at the Basilica of San Marco. In the XIX century the church was robbed of its altar and its decorations and in the years to come was first sold to a private and later transformed into a laboratory for marbles and sculptures. In the fifties of the '900 the building was rebuilt and adapted to the conference room. The Ateneo of San Basso is now deconsecrated former church located in the heart of Venice, Piazzetta dei Leoncini, to the left of the Basilica of San Marco. Since its reopening in 2002 is considered one of the most important cultural centers of the city.

Absolutely must see when you are on Venice. The septet ( 6 + soloist ) was amazing. They appear to be enjoying what they were playing. In particular the cellist in the performance was anything but incredible. Her interpretation of these baroque pieces was very very unusual. During the performance, when I closed my eyes and basked myself in the... More

We only visited this church because we went to a concert given by Virtuosi di Venezia, otherwise we would have missed it! It's a beautiful, understated church with beautiful mosaics and little wall sculptures. The acoustics are fabulous. The Ateneo is only a few steps away from the Piazza San Marco. Not to be missed!

The interpretation of the Four Seasons was good, and attending this concert in Venice made it special - it was a great experience for the kids. The concert hall is functional (not the most charming) and the show is obviously totally geared towards tourists. But it did not detract from the experience!

While in Venice we took the opportunity to take in a local show, a combination of Vivaldi and some of the better known arias. The show was about 90 minutes with a short intermission in the middle. The church venue was well suited with great acoustics and ambiance. I am a bit more of an opera/classical enthusiast than my wife... More

We very much enjoyed hearing Vivaldi's Four Seasons here. Small resonate hall with exceptional musicians. The gentlemen that performed the Solo Violin part was fantastic. The Vivaldi orchestra was also very good and their comunication and attention to detail was just beautiful. A beautiful night in Venice.

Greatly enjoyed the Virtuosi di Venezia. The soprano and tenor interacted so well and their voices were wonderful. The hall itself is nice to look at prior to the show start too. We have certainly added this to our frequent spots to visit when in Venice.

Started on time. The music was wonderful. Finished on time. Great value for money and a brilliant 75 minutes of entertainment. I'm not a music buff, but I could appreciate the excellence of the musicians performance.

As fan of Vivaldi we couldn't miss an opportunity to hear the 4 Seasons in his city. It was not expensive for a great moment of music, the orchestra had a very beautiful complicity and they sounded great in this place. If you are in Venice, just do it ;)

Firstly I would like to say that the Musicians who performed The Four Seasons were totally and utterly fantastic !!! Bravo to you all. I am not a great lover of Classical Music however my Husband is and has been since Childhood. The young Lady that was the main Violinist was better than Exceptional !! Loving Vivaldi I couldn't miss the opportunity to hear some music live. After searching I chose this venue as it offered a performance of the Four Seasons on a date I wanted. Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
