Far more affordable than a traditional gondola—and traveling the same scenic canals—is a ride via motorized Venice vaporetto. Think of it as public city bus on wheels, but with a far better view.

We bought the 3 day vaporetto pass and it truly was the best deal. The Vaporetto stops are easy and plenty to see Venice and all the nearby islands.

Make sure of validating your tickets though, especially if you haven't been to Venice before. It is essential that you do this any time that you board a vaporetto - this is done by presenting your ticket to one of the machines situated on either side of the entry to the pier, failure to do so could result in a... We loved the vaporetto - everything about it. And when we wanted to sit back and take a break, we just rode a boat for a bit. It's so efficient, well organised and staffed with helpful people. And travelling out to Burano and back was like having a mini day cruise. Definitely recommend getting a multi day pass for this.

There are many of these water buses traversing the grand canal and it is a safe and easy way of going to all the interesting sights. Generally the operatives on board are helpful and understand English.

Make sure you take at least 2 visits on a vaporetto up and down the Grand Canal during both the day and night as the views are spectacular! Very easy to navigate which stop/pontoon you need to be on and they all run on time! Go either a couple of stops or the whole journey down - there's something new... More

Once you know where you want to go taking the Vaporetto is a great way to get there. One feels less like a tourist and more like a local as the passengers are the people of Venice.

This is the city bus of Venice. Great way to get around at a reasonable cost. Stops at all major sites.

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
