We have had the pleasure of visiting this area many times ... and it seems like every time, one of us wants to go shopping in H&M. The really good thing is Bar Torino sits directly across from the entry to H&M ...and that is where I sit, The folks in Bar Torino are most friendly, the facilities are clean... More

Daughters were desperate for a wee so we entered the first bar we found. Black Hole of Calcutta looked like a sterilised theatre compared to the state of toilets in this bar: no soap or paper. Appalling, bordering on health hazard. Cappuccinos hugely overpriced. Brioches so crap that daughters, who eat anything with some sugar in it, left them there.... More

We had some lovely pasta here one lunchtime. It was packed with Venetian workers (always a good sign) and tourists. The workers ate standing up and the tourists took the seats. The waiter was slow but friendly and the food was good. €3 for the wine was a bonus!!!!

My wife and I went into this restaurant one evening. I went to the counter to ask where I could sit only to receive a sudden torrent of abuse from a female member of staff. I do not speak Italian however I have been around long enough to know when unpleasantries are being aimed at me. I appreciate Italian people... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
