The Ponte dei Pugni (often translated as ‘Bridge of Fists’, but actually meaning ‘Fighting Bridge) owes its name to an ancient tradition known as Venetian bridge wars. The mock battles, or battagliole, arose from rivalries between different factions of Venice. They were fought without any...More

An interesting history and you may almost miss this bridge as you walk past. There are four single footprints on each corner of the bridge to show the starting points for the fights which took place here. A sign saying Ponte dei Pugni hangs to...More

Here's the funny history behind the "Bridge of the Fists": Back in the Repubblica Serenissima days, Venetian clans would engage in massive brawl. One clan would stand on one side of the bridge, and another on the opposite. Fighters will be go all-out with their...More

Not sure I would go out of my way to see this bridge, but it's one of those that you keep falling over as you wander round Venice - often feeling as though you are going round in circles! Mind you, there are always signs...More

You can read the history of this little bridge on previous reviews. The location of traditional neighbourhood fisticuffs! For me, it is the location of what my family refers to as "the fruit boat", as its name suggest! A charming boat selling fresh fruit and...More

The bridge is nice and small. It is part of your route as you are heading towards academia and Saint Marco. Be sure to check the wood craft shop immediately after the bridge.

Attractive bridge in the lovely Dorsoduro district. Our boys were interested in the history behind the two pairs of footprints on the top of the bridge. These mark the starting point for fights between rivals - they would wrestle each other until one fell into...More

Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with
street artists, students, painters, sculptors,
restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and
heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's
collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for
evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries
cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica
buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob
