The visit to the Jewish Museum was excellent. They have a good tour of some of the synagogues, and the staff is well-informed.

We stayed in a refurbished palazzo in the Cannaregio district. It was beautiful and offered very quick access to many places, and was a great spot to start out from and come home to. We loved window shopping when walking with the living stream of people walking-tourists most, but locals as well.

Away from the most touristy areas in San Marco, Cannaregio has lots of architectural and historic gems to discover either by simply wandering the district or taking one of the free walking tours available - which are a good way to get tour orientation on a first visit. Full of interesting bars and restaurants that offer more authentic Venetian fare... More

The further north & west you go the more you leave the hubbub behind. You find yourself wandering through genuinely dormitory areas. A couple of the fondamentas have great local restaurants, otherwise you have the place almost to yourself.

Cannaregio district at the top of Venice, near the train and bus station areas is yet another lovely area of Venice to walk around, lots of canal side restaurants and plenty to see, including a shopping centre.

One of the delights of Venice is wandering off the beaten track and this is one of those nice areas that is more genuine - inasmuch as you can find anything really "genuine" in Venice. Italians bemoan the fact that the population is ageing and that young people move out of the city to get decent jobs, which is a... More

Tons cheaper to eat and drink in this quarter than the main tourist areas, especially alcohol which was a third of the price in trendy wine bars

A very characteristic part of Venice where the locals live and enjoy themselves, noted for the long canals with many bars and local type shops

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
