This small island is a bit off the usual Venetian path, but it’s worth seeing. Its Santa Maria Assunta church houses impressive mosaics, its bell tower offers great surrounding views—and it’s home to Locanda Cipriani, a well-regarded restaurant and hotel that played host to writing legend Ernest Hemingway .

There was not much there. It was included in our tour to Murano. There was a church and a tourist "trap" snack bar and tiny shop.

Torcello is one of the places that I had been wanting to return to for many years, and last year I was able to take my husband and two teenagers with me. We all agreed that it was a hauntingly beautiful, peaceful place, and a great escape from the crowds of Venice. There's no need to go with an organized... More

I adore Torcello. I love the peace and quiet and especially the history of Torcello. Venice is very special to me, having visited approximately 20 times over the years and every time, I venture over to Torcello. It is a deeply haunting small island. I hate to read that some tourists say, "don't bother, not much to see". This makes... More

This is well worth the difficulty in getting to the island. You have to go to Burano first to get a vaparetto to this island but they do run very regularly even in the winter. It is very peaceful and worth spending time here. There are some cafe's, lovely canal walk, a tower, church and museum to look at. You... More

Torcello is the original Venice, where it all started in the 5th century with mainlanders moving there to avoid repeated barbarian invasions. Interesting churches and old buildings. Read up on the sights before going to give you a better appreciation of what you will see. You can tie this visit together with Burano and Murano for a nice day trip.

Torcello is really "off the beaten track": the best way to get there is a vaparetto to Burano (which is itself worth an hour or so) then take the shuttle ferry to Torcello, running every 15 minutes. Torcello used to be the medieval centre of Venice until plague forced people away and they founded Venice as it is today. There... More

Torcello is not far from Burano which is also worth visiting. The old church is definitely worth the trip. This was once a city of 20.000 souls. Most departed on one of the malaria plagues. Church survived with some frescos and the typical design of romanesque churches. The museum is also worth a visit

We went to Torcello Island on a vaporetto day pass. When you exit the vaporetto there is a walk along a canal, past a restaurant and a couple of shops to reach the church. It was an interesting event to do but if you are short of time stick to Murano and Burano

Quite a nice island with a marvellous Byzantine Basilica which dates to 1008AD. The mosaic in the Basilica- 'The Dooms Day' takes over a whole wall. Truelly amazing. Inside the Basilica is a time warp to the Byzantine Empire and the columns and frescos and wall panels are like looking at a Roman Villa. If you love Roman Empire you'll... More

Did not expect this island to be so haunting, only 12 permanent residents and yet about 1000 years ago, it was home to about 50,000 people. Peaceful, serene place to meander around.
