About
Venice Music Project welcomes you to enjoy a true Baroque concert experience, entering its second decade as the foremost nonprofit association in Italy for musical research, restoration, and performance. VMP takes you into the world of Casanova, as if you were in a Venetian palazzo or opera house. You will hear music that was first performed in Venice over 200 years ago, at the height of the Venetian Baroque’s musical splendor. Just as other international organizations restore Venice’s art and architecture, VMP restores her music. Over the past decade, our musical archaeology has unearthed thousands of amazing manuscripts that have been lost in archives for centuries, for no better reason than that the world went mad for Mozart and forgot the composers who taught and formed him. Venice Music Project’s musical detectives have been hard at work to uncover lost musical masterpieces, so you may be lucky enough to be among the first to to hear one of them in modern day!

The area

Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

Venice is a city linked to beautiful music. The ensemble has some very talented musicians and singers. Unfortunately, the soprano who leads the group doesn't so much murder the songs as bludgeon them to death and then violate the corpses afterwards. If you imagine listening to cats being strangled, you're not far off. Manage to book a concert without the blonde lead soprano (who promotes herself prominently on their advertising and social media) on the program and you're in for a treat.

Given that Venice has such an important place in the history of music, it is surprising and disappointing that so many of the concerts on offer are wall-to-wall Four Seasons. The Venice Music project is the antidote to all that: clever programming and high quality musicians using baroque instruments, and not a wig in sight! We heard their first performance of the 2014 season, which included two oboe concertos (Albinoni and Vivaldi) and three soprano arias. It was wonderful to hear these very technically challenging oboe concertos played by the entertaining and characterful Nicola Favoro on a baroque oboe. And Liesl Odenweller beguiled the audience with her clear voice, nicely balanced with the accompanying instruments, before letting off some true baroque fireworks in Vivaldi's motet "Nulla in mundo pax sincero" RV 630. Highly recommended.

Tonight's concert included two less familiar (but lovely) concerti by Vivaldi, an oboe concerto by
Albinoni, and four soprano arias from Baroque "Italian operas" by Vivaldi, Handel, etc. The music was performed by the Venetia Antiqua Ensemble using the soft stringing of original or period copy instruments. The execution was flawless and golden. Unlike many of the other Venice/Vivaldi performance groups this one varies its program and seems to avoid the "stuck in a rut, play it in your sleep" syndrome mentioned in reviews elsewhere. The venue at the small baroque San Giovanni Evangelisti Church was intimate and the evening was inspiring. Back when I lived in Hawaii we would have used the word "chicken skin" to describe the experience. It is a high compliment. There are many fine groups to choose from in Venice. I am glad I made the choice i did. Next time, I will choose them again. If you want a "show" go elsewhere. If you want the music, you find it here.

Quite by chance we found ourselves sitting in the astonishingly beautiful church of San Giovanni Evangelista one evening and we listened, spell bound, to a superb concert given by the Venice Music Project. The aim of the Project is to bring back to Venice International level performances of early music on original instruments, while at the same time raising funds to invest in restorations that will help conserve the works of art contained in this church. They perform concerts throughout the year and I can highly recommend them.

What you get: great music, beautifully played by an enthusiastic ensemble in a delightfully intimate atmosphere. I thought I knew my baroque music well but the programme was full of hidden gems that were new to me, played to a very high quality on original instruments. What you don't get is touristic performances of the four seasons and other hoary old favourites. The church is in a quiet neighbourhood: there's a great bar around the corner for a pre-concert spritz.

If you're the sort of person who comes to Venice to get off the beaten track, to avoid the menu turistico and see something really genuine, then this concert series is for you.

I heard the music before I saw the performance. Such was the quality of the singing that I felt compelled to ask the Venice Music Project to perform at a corporate event, not knowing how such an esoteric choice of Baroque music would go down with a group of businessmen. On the night the VMP brought the best out of everyone. It was inspiring and so beautiful. Liesl Odenweller is superb and the players are breath-taking. To my ear, they were flawless but in addition, they were enthusiastic and compelling. It is hard to imagine a more accessible high cultural event. For anyone visiting Venice, the Venice Music Project is wonderful evening of entertainment.

My husband summed this up by calling it "sweet" which is exactly what it was - raw musical talent in a lovely setting, untouristy and spell binding. We were surprised by how few people were there - for €20 each how could you miss it? Lovely way to spend an early evening before dinner and a great way to support the local artists. Recommended.

Truly an amazing experience. The staff is highly talented and extremely friendly. The surprano was very friendly and they all took the time to socialize afterwards as well. Highly recommend even if you're not a big fan of Baroque music because you can still appreciate the talent that goes in it.

My husband and I stumbled upon this performance while site seeing. We were easily able to purchase tickets at the door and enjoyed a 90 minute Vivaldi concert by local and extremely talented musicians. There were less than 100 other guests for this performance and it was delightful to be away from the thick crowds on the street, especially in the evening. This performance seemed a bit expensive, but this is Venice and nothing is cheap. I would highly recommend seeing a show, and I'm sure if you're not a fan of Vivaldi, they will change your mind.
