Neighbourhood: Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

Just one mile east of San Marco square are the Biennale gardens. Pleasant to walk to along the shoreline of the lagoon, finally getting away from the crowded center. There are 30 permanent pavilians erected by various countries since the first Biennale in 1895, but most of the area is pleasant parkland. The exhibition grounds can only be entered with a Green Pass to prove you are free from corona and a ticket (25€ or 16€ if you are under 26). Parkland (shore side) free admission.

Flying over the alps set the scene for an unforgettable, magical getaway...
We travelled along the Grand Canal via water bus to reach this little gem of an area, lush with greenery and rich in artworks.
The cobbled streets and unique residences decorate this area beautifully and boulevard style Via Garibaldi provides an array of opportunities for eating and drinking out as well as touristy type shopping that leads right back to the canal.
For a quieter, more authentic stay in Venice, this area is perfection!

Wonderful park in the corner of the island, cool area where actually real local people live and where you can walk your dogs, walk around and enjoy some peace and quiet.

We walked to the park this morning, and it is a nice 20 minute walk from St. Marks. The park itself is very pleasant with lots of shade trees, paths for strolling, and benches for relaxing. And my husband who is a bird watcher spotted a few to add to his list.

The Giardini Pubblici is the largest green space in Venice and a nice area to stroll around after the madness and crowds of St Marks Square. These formal public gardens with their wide gravel paths are a bit tucked away at the far end of the Castello neighborhood, past the Arsenale and about a 20 minute stroll from St Marks Square, although it is a very pleasant walk with good views along the water front path. Alternatively you could also utilise the Giardini or St Elena Vaporetto stops and boats 1, 4.2, 5.2, 6 and 8 stop at one or both of these.

I saw this area when we went past on a cruise ship and thought I would like to walk from Piazza San Marco down to this area to take in the variety so one night, that's exactly what I did and I walked along the waterfront to these gardens and then found a route back. It was one of my most enjoyable times in our 5 day visit. I reached the end of the gardens as it went dark so I walked back through the park lit by the streetlights which was wonderful.
It is a reasonable walk from the centre of town so may be too much for some but I would definitely recommend visiting if you can and have the time for a nice evening stroll.

Being photographers we spent a lovely day here in the fog walking around taking pictures of this quiet and tranquil part of Venice. The tracery of the winter trees was beautiful with the pigeons and seagulls flying through the gardens.

This lovely park is just 15 minutes from the hectic Piazza San Marco. The kids had a lot of fun relaxing in the shade, boat watching by the pier and running around. Our guidebook (Venice and Lake Garda with Kids) recommended two more parks in the city, but this one was our personal favorite, and it's also the best choice if you are visiting the ship pavilion and the Arsenale.

A truly lovely park, an enjoyable stroll from all the bustle of St Mark’s, that shows a completely different side to Venice. Calm and peaceful. The path by the water gives great views across the lagoon.

Can you tell me about these gardens? Worth the visit? We'll be in Venice the 2nd week in May.
thank you!

The gardens are pleasant and a good place to sit on a bench for a spell of people watching. I like spending time there and there is a cafe (expensive) for a snack or a drink. But the gardens are not like those you will find in England... There are a few rose bushes in beds intermingled with statues but not great floral displays. Good place if you have children as there is a playground with equipment. I agree with Ian, not a must see if you have a full programme - I like spending time there as it is just less than a minute away from the apartment I use.
