Of all the churches and holy sites we visited in Northern Italy (many) S. Giovanni in Valle was the most welcoming, peaceful and spiritual. On entry we were made to feel very welcome and had the layout explained by a very charming gentleman and further explanations were available from a knowledgable and friendly custodian.
It is the only site, including those important and popular with tourists for centuries, I would revisit and keep revisiting. Although there was no service and there were other tourists its simple elegance was respected with whispers and quietness.
Simplicity combined with a peaceful location made the walk out of Central Verona worth every step.
I was moved.

If you want a sense of true history, the street, and the church here will give you that. Not a high tourist area, which is what is most enjoyable.

A lovely little old church half way up the hill on the way to the Villa Fran.

Very nice restoration job of this romanic era church, but visiting hours are limited, and even when you shown up at the right time, it may still be closed. Still, worth a visit if you can afford to go a few times, so as to make it likely that you may get inside.
