Ideal trip not to be missed, the ceramics shops are amazing, take your wallet you will be tempted!

Open mornings do evenings, closed in the afternoon.

There is an extensive ceramic quarter in the old town and wonderful people. Many stores are in grottos or caves. Off the beaten path but it should be a destination. The new town has everything including high end shopping.
The ceramic quarter is not just shops with things to sell but also working ceramic studios. You would need several days to visit them all.

We discovered the perfect bring home gift for best friends. Ceramic house number plates. Many combinations in the Ceramic town near Taranto in Italy’s boot.
Many shops will customize and mail it for you.

Grottaglie, is a simple town with some highlights:
1) Ceramics but that is very concentrated in the lower part. Quartier Ceramique. Look further, eg in the cellars (wonderfully cool and authentic).
2) The old center, quite nice but during the day there is sometimes little to do, but a little wandering is part of it, only there is very little hospitality at first sight and few terraces.
3) Gravinas that can usually only be visited with a guide.
4) Castello, you cannot visit the tower, but you can visit the ceramics museum on the ground floor (entrance fee) and you will immediately see part of the Castello.
5) shopping. There are some nice shops, but there is no real shopping center, but a long street where the shops are located.
Only the quartiere ceramique is touristy, the rest of the city takes little account of tourists.

We drove almost an hour to get to Grottaglie - the 'capital of ceramics'.
What a disillusionment: no terraces, no bars, no people, no ceramics, empty streets. If there was already a terrace on display, it was still deserted (see photo).
And okay, it was Sunday, but there is still plenty to do at the same time in other cities such as Monopoli, Locorotonde, Alberobello, etc.
Grottaglie is just a dirty town, I recommend you visit something else like Martina Franca.

Still not very touristy, this is why I recommend it, everything to discover and with free, uncrowded beaches near the Ionian coast of Salento, 28 minutes from Grottaglie.
