This is the best free public beach in Catania. The place technically closes at 18.00 but is practically open all the time. The seafront is rocky with the volcanic rocks providing a habitat for lots of fishes, shellfish, sea urchins, stars and whatnot. Ideal for snorkeling.

Absolutely horrific. Would not recommend by all means. Very dirty beach, no place to sit and relax, and the whole place is crowded as fck. The basalt rocks look quite cool, but it's not really worth a visit imo, especially not, if you just want to go for a swim. If you want a nice beach in Catania, visit one of the three public ones, a little further from down town. They are called Spiaggia Libera 1, 2, & 3.

We were recommended this black sand beach by our hotel but we realised very quickly after coming that it's impossible to relax and have a swim as it was horribly, awfully dirty everywhere.

There is an excellent communal bath a couple of hundred metres accross the bay, clean wooden planks with stairs to the water that I would recommend.

Some 60 years ago this place was at the outskirts of the city - a small fishermen village. Now the city grew and it became pretty central.
Nice to have a walk, to eat delicious food near the sea, to enjoy seaviews and maybe even have a swim on a hot afternoon.
I love this place and come often when I am in Catania.

As a Catania native and having visited and lived in many places I can guarantee you that this beach is a wonder and one of a kind to sunbathe downtown, take a plunge from the jetty of the fishermen village or buy the fresh catch of the day directly off the fishing boats at 8am.

Porto di San Giovanni Li Cuti is located roughly north-east of central Catania. The beach has some volcanic sand but the shoreline is shielded by fairly large black boulders, some big enough to lay down on. The rock gets very hot under the summer sun. Take footwear, such as flip-flops, or expect to get the soles of your feet burnt.

The sea was chilly but bearable in early May, depending on the weather of course. With goggles/mask it is easy to spot small shoals of fish swimming near the shore.

The beach is popular with the locals, especially teenagers, even during the week, so it can get a little crowded during the mornings.

Catania is quite a big city, so depending upon were you stay you might find the beach at Porto di San Giovanni Li Cuti a little awkward to get to, although there are plenty of buses in Catania. My walk from Via Etnea in central Catania took about thirty minutes.

Really enjoyed this beach with the family. Gets deep quickly for good swimming. Enjoyed jumping off the rock and harbour side. Would not suit toddlers.

This beach is so fun and a perfect place for a family or group to enjoy while in Catania. It is a public beach and it is a deck built above the lava rocks. You need to bring a towel and there really isnt anything to buy around there. There was a man selling fresh coconut and waters which were delicious.

The water itself is deep so definitely be a good swimmer. It was so beautiful and clear! Perfect last day in Sicily

Black beach to see was our desire...
For that we took the bus from Via Etnea to Piazza Europa and walk from here to San Giovanni Li Cuti.
The place is wonderful and volcanic beach is interesting.
We had lunch at Nero Li Cuti- first time Caballo steak!
