It was closed! So 2000 or so Cunard passengers were not able to enjoy the culture of Messina - perhaps someone should have told them?

The Regional Museum is easy to access via the tram (last stop). The museum contains very few pieces of art and the museum staff are not friendly or helpful in any way. I was the only patron in the museum and I was followed around as if I was going to steal or destroy something. The Caravaggio’s are amazing and... More

Once upon a time Zm ssina was a prospwrous and lively town. Evidence of this is the art production that gathered around that old city, and the artists rhat were active there, Antonello, Caravaggio. But today ot is a temple of decay and corruption. As it is shown by this museum that after thiety years is not yet capable of... More

This small museum in the city of Messina is easy to get to and has decent street parking around the building. Although there are a handful of interesting pieces by Sicilian artists, the main attractions of the museum are the two Caravaggio's in its collection. The Adoration of the Shepherds and the Resurrection of Lazarus are beautiful examples of the... More

located at the north end of the tram line you should visit this site if you enjoy religious art. Several galleries to go through. No crowds.

We were very well looked after, the caretakers wanting us to see and understand their treasures. The wooden carved cross was amazing and the Caravaggios superb.

I only went to this museum to see the Caravaggio paintings; and they didn't disappoint. There are many panels on the wall, in English, explaining the restoration process and some of the history of the paintings. I sort of thought that the price was a bit expensive (8Euros/adult) but then I guess we all have to play our part in... More

I went on this tour as part of a Viking Star Cruise Excursion. We had a local guide (actually, he was from the area, but he also lived in the United States part of the year and was a guide for Rick Steves). I wish I had known more about the museum before we went, but I did know about... More

The full name of this place is the Museo Interdisciplinare Regionale di Messina. It's a little museum, mostly populated with paintings by Sicilian artists you've never heard of. The amazing standouts are two monumental works by Caravaggio - * The Resurrection of Lazarus * Adoration of Shepherds There's an interesting story board about Caravaggio's flight to Sicily and about the... The new wing is not open, and looks like it might fall down before they finish it. There is no bookshop or place to get a snack. 2 Caravaggios made up for any inconvenience, however. Compared to other Italian museums, pitiful.
