I had heard of Vucciria market as the oldest and most traditional market in Palermo and we were therefore keen to visit. However, it was pretty disappointing.
It is an open air street market with some fruit and veg stalls, some street food and a a range of stalls at the end with a quite random assortment of hats, berets, posters, old photos, postcards, china and bric-a-brac. The market streets were quite dark and without much energy. It all seemed rather unremarkable and lacklustre. In contrast, the Capo market was much more vibrant. It was bustling and was more lively and more colourful.
We stopped and ate at Dadalia Osteria in Vucciria. It was OK and was perfectly adequate considering that we only had two requirements at the time - we were hungry and needed food and we wanted to sit down.
Overall, if you only have limited time in Palermo and you want to see a traditional street market, then I would skip Vucciria because Capo is a better option.
To be fair we were there in the day and I believe that Vucciria comes alive at night so perhaps it might have been a different experience in the evening.
NEARBY: At one end of the Vucciria market is the Baroque St Dominic’s church and the Column dell'Immacolata. Also of interest is the area around Piazza Garrafaello. It was horribly bombed during WWII but street art has sprung up amidst the ruins.

The "Vucciria" is one of the historical markets in Palermo. "Vucciria" means confusion in Sicilian.
I passed through this market a couple of times: there are a few stalls, but it looks like different stalls are open on different days / different times.
It's really nothing special, and prices are very high, especially for tourists.

Great little market, some groovy spots... but stay away from BAR WAY on the corner down the hill, unless you like cold food cooked badly & being ripped off when you try to pay for it. Instead, go one door up where the guy next door cooks his pasta out front & a line of locals wait patiently for what is clearly delicious.

Having read reviews recommending this market I expected something extensive, full of fresh produce and noise. What I found was an anticlimax with very few shops offering fresh produce. This is definitely not one of the top touristic attractions of Palermo.

Stopped in this market for something to eat on way to a performance.ance at Teatro Massimo. It had a good buzz and I can imagine it's great fun later at night- unfortunately I don't make it back to see!

Once famed for its bountiful produce and other food stuff, it's been greatly reduced to tourist-trap restaurants and junk souvenir shops. It's honestly not even worth going to this part of town for. If you want to see an outdoor market that is still a functioning market, go to Ballaro.

No one loves Palermo more than I do, having lived there after marrying (in the Cathedral) into an old Sicilian family, but your review regarding 'a Vucciria is misleading. While it's been a few years since I've been back, I know that it's still not a place where American tourists can wander blithely about unawares. It's an area that can be, and historically has been, dangerous. Not without reason does the name mean "the slaughterhouse." Young ladies should not wander about alone, there or anywhere in Sicily. It's unseemly. Sicilian girls don't, and if you do, you'll be treated like what you will seem to the Sicilian men: a loose woman. You would be better off in a group or with a male companion. That being said, the food is wonderful (try the octopus) and you will see the true character of Sicily.

Having just dropped our bags at the hotel, our room was not quite ready so we hit the streets and we were not disappointed. This was the Sicily we came to see: Tables of gorgeous, impossibly tiny wild strawberries, peaches the size of softballs, whole swordfishes being carved up, baskets of tiny fish waiting to be taken home and fried up.
We happened upon a stall selling stunningly simple sandwiches of fried-on-the-spot chick pea fritters (I think it is called pannelle). The vendor asked if we wanted eggplant, too. We did. And we happily strolled the market, eating our 1 euro sandwiches, juices dripping down our chins.
We were able to follow this with a paper cone full of fresh seafood salad and a few pieces of fresh fruit -- all while taking in the sights of whole sheeps' heads, cheese mongers and fish mongers.
Well worth a visit.

The Vucciria Market can be found at Piazza San Domenico immediately adjacent to the Church, as it winds it's way down towards Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
The scents are amazing - I was guided in by the strong scent of fresh peaches before it gave way to spices and then to the cooking meat smells. The stalls sell a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, locally caught fish, preserves, spices, cheese and household goods and are a daily part of life for locals as well as an attraction for visitors.
I had been warned not to wander around by myself, not to stand around taking photos with my camera on show and to keep a tight grip on my bag. Hmm...I managed one out of three and kept a tight grip on my bag!
I found myself in a side street leading to an alleyway and felt a little uncomfortable until I found my way back to Piazza San Domenico. However, I would definetely recommend a visit but I would also recommend sticking to the main throughfare.

We arrive in Sicily on a Sunday - what would you suggest to do? I am assuming many things may be closed?
Thank you!
