Beautiful Church overlooking Piazza Bellini along with those of San Cataldo and Santa Caterina. Founded in the twelfth century at the behest of the Syriac admiral of King Roger, it is still today the parish of the Byzantine Catholic Albanian rite. Arab-Norman style lallo have overlapped additions over the centuries creating an interesting combination on the outside. The interior can be visited for a fee but when we were there it was not accessible as (as you can see from the photos) a wedding was about to be celebrated.

Spectacular example of encounters between various cultures: Arab-Norman, Byzantine and Baroque. A small treasure chest from which beauty overflows in every corner. The Church, Catholic of the Greek Orthodox rite, has recently been perfectly restored: colors, mosaics, paintings, columns, marbles and floors that give intense feelings of wonder and wonder. Not for nothing is it a UNESCO heritage site. It is only visited in the morning from 9 am to 1 pm and from Monday to Friday. Admission 2 euros, with discounts on the entrance to the overlooking church of San Cataldo, another Unesco heritage site. Precious!

Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio (La Martorana) is way more of a worthwhile visit than Palermo Duomo Cathedral. Built in the 12th century it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and architecturally comprises a mixture of styles (Byzantine/Baroque) from throughout the ages. The exquisitely decorated interior is absolutely stunning. Almost every square inch is decorated. The ceilings with stunning paintings or mosaics of the night sky with stars; the columns and arches with gold leaf mosaics of biblical scenes; the high alter a riot of gold and marble statuary; the floors polished marble and more mosaics. We spent an hour wandering around marveling at the decoration and realized that the ornateness of the building might actually distract from the true purpose of worship. It is stunningly beautiful though. The nominal entrance fee makes this place the best value attraction in Palermo.

Even though this old church, founded in 1143, is not open for tourists on Sundays, we were able to visit it. There was a christening ceremony, interestingly partly in Latin, partly in Greek! Of course, we remained at the back where we were very close to the famous mosaic of Roger II. It depicts the moment when the Norman king receives his crown from Christ.
Next time in Palermo, we will visit the La Martorana again to see Byzantine mosaics in the dome and on the arches.

Church just beautiful. Seen from the outside you would never imagine seeing so much opulence inside. Must see if you are in Palermo. Visited on 25 June. Admission 3 euros, 2 if you visit more churches.

Small but beautiful church. With the very different San Cataldo next door you can see two very different medieval churches for 3.5 euro. This is a bargain compared to the Palatine chapel or Monreale. The gold mosaics are amazing

It is one of the greatest examples of Arab-Norman art of the 12th century. The interior is very interesting for the presence of Byzantine mosaics and eighteenth-century paintings. The part of the main altar is very rich and elaborate. To visit.

Tiny little church that you can visit in five minutes. It costs just a couple of euros to get in but it will be the most amazing five minutes of your visit.
Compared with the Cathedral and the palace, it’s tiny but you’ll get the same wow factor - almost worth the trip to Palermo in itself.

It is part of the monuments of the Arab-Norman of Palermo World Heritage. We did not go in to see her because it was the end of our tour in Palermo. It is very close to the Quatre Canti and everything because it is adjacent to the church of San Cataldo, overlooks the Piazza Bellini where the Theatre of the same name flanks and faces the church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria (with the secret of the cloister that if we were interested in visiting) and the rear elevation of the Palazzo Pretorio.
