Siracusa has much to offer. Perhaps, too much. The incredible Greek theatre, the Duomo etc. I was most of all moved by the Latomie of the Capuchins where, according to tradition, the captured Greeks were imprisoned, withered away and perished. Much more moving than the Ear...More

The latomie dei Cappuccini is the oldest quarry of Syracusa. You'll take the steps down to the gorges of the quarry where you can stroll around to escape the lunchtime heat. The landscape is varied. It could/should be cleaner (they should take away old foliage,...More

From Ortigia you can get one of the small buses (2 I think) up to this Latomie for 1 Euro. (opposite is the war memorial on the cliff top) There are guided tours (11.00, 12.00 I noticed) but we arrived at the wrong time. Quiet,...More

This was directly beneath out hotel and very pretty. We didn't walk down into the quarry but saw much of it from above.

It's a small, difficult to find, quite overgrown, old stone quarry. There are definitely much better ones and much better attractions in Syracuse worth visiting. It's a pretty unkempt place, not inviting to stay. In front of the entrance at the steep coast you have...More

Nice park for a relaxing afternoon-walk - hidden for the sun. You can do the whole park within 1 hour. Check the opening-hours. And do visit the coffe- and delicates-shop nearby the round-about after the walk!

Latomie dei Cappuccini is one of the twelve ancient stone quarries in Siracusa and was my favourite site in the city. According to the brochure for the site this is the largest at 23,000m², deepest 30-40 metres and oldest at 6th century BC of the...More
