This may seem a little insignificant but I often have trouble in Sicily finding the best place to park. Taormina has two large parking areas that I know of. One at Porta Catania and the other at Porta Messina (Lumbi). I was favorably impressed by the parking garage at the Catania entrance to Taormina. It was clean and secure. There is a payment machine that is user friendly and you have ample time to leave the parking garage after payment. Although I have not personally used the parking garage at the Messina entrance to Taormina (Lumbi), the locals tell me to avoid it at all costs. Something to consider if you plan to visit Taormina.

Gate at the Catania end of Corso Umberto in what was the city wall - very narrow so the streets are pedestrianised.

This is where the cobblestoned arcade begins in the heart of Taormina. You shall be crossing it many times over during a stay there as it is a key arrival point of every tourist. Enjoyable walks along the streets are a must.

This is the other gate to Corso Umberto I, here you can find a post office and a taxi station. If you walk to the left you will find Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stephano. easy to reach with nice gardens, sculptures and some of local modern time artist Giuseppe Mazzullo's art inside.

As I wrote in another review on Porta Messina, since Corso Umberto is the main street in the Old City of Taormina and since it goes from the southern Porta Catania to the Northern Porta Messina (as are situated these two main Cities), you will certainly pass by Porta Catania as you will pass by Porta Messina .
Since Porta Catania has the main Parking situated just nearby (a 7 storey building 100 meters away) if you have a car no doubt you'll have no choice but to cross this Gate.
It is actually more beautiful than Porta Messina and so are its surroundings and the entrance to the old city of Taormina.
It is also closer to the Duomo and its Piazza.

One of the main old gates that marks the south entrance of Corso Umberto, the pedestrian only street with shops/restaurants. It's not quite as ornate as the Porto Messina Arch in the north end but it is fitting for this beautiful area! It took just 10 minutes (without stopping!) to get to the other end.

No big deal - this is the arch at the south end Corso Umberto, Porta Messina is at the north, about a kilometre away along the pedestrianized main street filled with shops and restaurants aimed at the tourists.
It is pretty though, has a concentration of restaurants and good for people watching.

As you walk up you see the impressive structure of the gate house. Made of old stones and mortar the gate house in its day would of been an easy place to defend. Attached to the outer walls.

Does the Porta Catania Parking garage have elevators from all levels to bring you up level with Corso Umberto main street?
Written October 8, 2018
Yes it does and a public toilet which I think does not require coins

There are 3 ZTL restricted driving areas around Taormina. The ZTL maps don't have enough detail to see if this parking garage in inside a ZTL. You would think it is not so the public could access, but I wanted to confirm if someone has more information about the ZTL.
