Isola Bella
About
Isola Bella, or "beautiful island," is a picturesque gem just a stone's throw from Taormina in Sicily. Relax on the pebble beach and swim in the turquoise waters with the stunning Sicilian coastline as your backdrop—the beach has plenty of sunbeds available for rent. To get to the island, you can either take the cable car or climb a steep flight of steps, then walk down the narrow strip of sand that connects the island to Taormina. You can explore the island and the surrounding waters of Taormina on a boat tour. Visit during the summer months for warmer weather and waters. – Tripadvisor

    Not worth the trip.
Not amazing. Nowhere near as impressive or pretty as many Greek islands. Tatty beach fully of second rate cafes. Just not worth the €10 cable car fee. Wish we had stayed in town.

Beautiful small island with curious villa and labyrinth of hidden paths
The small island hides an extensive network of hidden paths, grottos, tunnels and a villa built into the rock. Like a giant Victorian grotto. Easy walk from the main road down the signposted path. Only 4€ and even has a clean toilet and shower. Looking forward to visiting again in a couple of years when the conservation and path rebuilding should be complete.

    Go there
It's possible to walk from the Corso Umberto area of Taormina or ride the tram. We walked down and rode the tram coming up. The tide was low enough to allow people to walk from the mainland to the beach. A very short distance. Warm beautiful water and a fun experience.

Beware of stones and jellies - otherwise, a lovely experience!
A really beautiful beach, well worth the visit. My partner and I walked down from the high street, and took the shuttle bus back up. Definitely a work out for your legs! The beach was relatively quiet due to the time of year, and there was only one salesman trying to sell an excursion. Main thing to note is that it's a stony beach, so shoes are A MUST! And also there are jellyfish in the water!! I was surprised that there were no signs indicating this, but after speaking to locals, both types of jellies (brown and red) sting. You can get 'afterbite' in the local pharmacies, but I decided not to swim after that! The island is very pretty to look at and explore. A really fun trip, provided you're aware of all of the above.

    Pretty But Overrated
Isola Bella was on our must do list for Taormina. It was one of those things that I did once but would never do again. We walked the 300 steps up and down, the climb up was slow and difficult. The only good thing was there were several spots along the way to take pictures. Once you get down to the bottom you have to walk through another beach area and a restaurant. Then you walk across the narrow strip of beach, fighting the waves, to get to Isola Bella. Once there there’s not much to do, the area is very small and you have to pay to actually visit the small island. Personally I wouldn’t recommend a visit, instead I would find a spot above in Taormina and take some nice pictures.

A must if you’re in Taormina
We walked along the pebbly beach towards their beachfront restaurant, for a spot of lunch. It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon taking in the scenery with a glass of wine in hand. You need to descend a long flight of stairs to get to the beach so take it easy if you’ve got dodgy knees. It’s a great spot to visit but very busy in summer, so book a table.

    Overrated!
We went here after seeing all the amazing photos on line. In reality you'd be better seeing it from the hillside. Lots of steps down to a very busy stretch of beach, we sat far a little while and were constantly approached and asked if we wanted a massage! The sparkling clear water is pretty but felt a bit underwhelmed as the little island was all padlocked.

    worth it
clearest water I’ve ever swam in. paid 10 eur for a chair and sunbathed into oblivion. keep in mind you’ll definitely need swim shoes as it’s a rocky beach w slippery reef, but that didn’t change my beautiful experience. there will be people asking if you want a massage but that’s typical of any public beach. Would recommend

    Not worth the trouble
Beautiful views but extremely expensive and overrated for what you get. We paid 20eur pp for beach sunbeds and umbrella (discounted from 25 as it was 3PM) and another 15 eur flat rate for a parking place 10 min away. Not sure why the beach is so popular given that it’s with stones, so difficult to get in and out of the water, and very busy. After visiting Fontane Bianchi this was a disappointment. As others have remarked there’s jellyfish in the water so watch out for stings.

    Beware jellyfish…..
Beautiful location for swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, etc. Steep path down to the beach from the road. Some nice restaurants/cafes along the beach. Nice cool, fresh water showers to clean after a swim. Island of Isola Bella is pretty, 5€ entry, not all that much to see, some nice views. Beware jellyfish- The mauve stinger jellyfish is common here, my wife had a severe sting, very painful with swelling on her upper body. Amazing there are not any more signs to warn people. Lifeguards did a good job overall.

It was a real disappointment after having unrealistic expectations from reading good reviews about it. Perhaps I should say my experience is in August and the height of “holiday season “ although there has been no school terms since February because of Covid-19. Not only was it overcrowded with towels and umbrellas in every bit of space possible, to the point one can’t find a way through the bodies, too many people leave rubbish behind. Some wear masks but it’s impossible to keep 1m apart from others. We visited the island for €4 each, although it’s a coold relief from the sun, quite few parts were closed to public for whatever reason. Needless to say we didn’t stay long.

My wife enjoyed touring the house on the island and a dip in the small bay. I found the whole experience existentially alienating. This is a small rock beach overcrowded with people shuffling around trying to find a square metre or two to lower their behinds onto the stony ground inches from the next pair of buttocks. Meanwhile tourist boats circle like sharks looking to bite a chunk out of your wallet in exchange for a puffy ride around the bay and the bars on the beach are like the economy section of a cut price airplane stuck on the runway - people packed like sardines shouting in vain for service and filling the place with the scent of desperation. They’ve come because the place seems a romantic idyll only to discover that Satre was right: l’enfer c’est les sutures. My advice : read about the place 100 years ago. It is a place much better imagined in the mind than in reality. And for god sake don’t go if there’s a cruiser in the local harbour.

No public toilets just ones belonging to the cafes which rent out sun loungers for €15 euros each. The small area of beach left free is covered in very dusty pebbles that leave marks all over your clothes. In the first hour we were approached about ten times by women offering us Thai massage. They would hardly take no for an answer and stood there pestering us as we tried to read our books. In late April it was quite crowded. August must be a nightmare! The sea was cool but very clear and we had a good swim. It is difficult to get in the water as there are large pebbles. A man set up his boat rental business in the middle of the free part of the beach and shouted to anyone walking past about his boat trip and how much it cost and how good it was. All in all a horrible experience in a place that could be beautiful. They have killed the goose that could have laid them many golden eggs!

The beaches surrounding Isola Bella are beautiful. You can go there for free, alternatively you can pay to enter a Lido/beach club and get a sunbed and towel.
Crystal clear waters and a beautiful view. It has a really large shallow area to swim in.
Just be prepared for the stones (this isn't a sandy beach) and to be offered half a dozen massages!

You can also pay to enter the nature reserve on Isola Bella. It's €4 each and more than half of it is closed off. You get a nice view from the other side of the island but that's about it, we had seen everything in 5 minutes. The man at the ticket office was also rude and had his mask dangling off one ear. There are a lot of "no access" barriers and a lady shouted at us for going near it when I was actually waiting for a group of people to pass at a safe distance. She then also told us off for not wearing our masks when the group in front of us were not wearing them and the nature reserve is also outside. Then another member of staff watched us like a hawk?! Felt very uncomfortable and not worth €8.

Paid 8 Euros (2 people) to walk along a very limited/restricted path. Most paths are closed or blocked off for maintenance. Not able to get even close to the house or even a glimpse of it. Better to view the island from the beach or one of the viewing points just below Taormina and save yourself the money for a glass of wine.

After ready reviews firstly how to get to Isola Bella and secondly the hassle with a busy beach and to prevent getting frustrated we decided to rent a boat for the day instead. I highly recommend click&boat, where you can rent boats at good prices without being ripped off by tour guides etc.

We had a boat big enough for 6. We drove around Isola Bella and Grotto Azzurra and dropped the anchor where we wanted to snorkel. We had a brilliant day, we also chilled sunbathing in the Mazzaro Bay.

Dont fight with others, do what we did and view these beautiful places by sea instead.

Amazing beach with wonderful view. Highly recommended to visit. You can access via stairs or with Funivia from the city of Taormina. Be prepared there is only sporadic bus ride from/to Taormina train station if you don't access via Taormina.

This is a beautiful place to see. We got the cable car down which took 3 minutes and cost €3 but you need to pay €6 if you want a return. We also went on the island and went to the house and gardens. I recommend this as it was gorgeous. We also took a short boat trip for €25 which was nice but not worth €25. I woul haggle it down as it was supposed to be 3/4 hour but was cut short to 1/2 hour. Make sure you wear beach shoes for a pebbly beach

A honeypot of a place. It is quite pretty with rocks covered in greenery, rock pools and bathe dipping pools and the water quality is clear and great for snorkelling. The ‘island’ is reached by a narrow short stretch of shingle sand, which also serves as a beach so expect to be stepping over people as you get there. The gardens and museum are currently closed for renovation, but you wouldn’t know it until you got to the gate. The beach itself is extremely popular and you will be lucky to get a small scrap of it to sit on. The peak season must be horrendous. The tourist pictures of it must have airbrushed out the people. There are sellers of various items (massages, beach shoes, sunglasses) plying their wares up and down the beach - some in particular quite intrusive and persistent. There are also restaurants and bars. You can hire kayaks and boat trips around the island.Access down is via a steep set of steps from the main road. If coming from the cable car, don’t take the first lot of steps you see as that takes you to the other cove which is laid out as private (restaurant) areas of the beach (the public bit is small at the end). Instead go to the main road, turn right for about 200metres and the steps down are well signed with an information sign about the nature reserve, although hiring jet skis seems a bit anathema to the whole protected area.
