Real gem

Our guide showed us this place, I'm afraid we wouldn't get to find this place without recommendations. The church was built in rocks and our guide told us that she believes that this place is sacral and people come here for help if they lose any hope. Another great part of this church is a fantastic view!

Worth climbing for the view

Quite a hike up a lot of steps but the views are great. Not suitable for less able bodied travellers.

Nice chapel
Sep. 2020
We were very lucky that it was open when we visited. This is a nice little chapel carved on the rock. Views from the terrace are quite nice.

Fantastic little church
Sep. 2019
We were staying in a hotel which was a short walk away but it would definitely be worth either walking up the winding staircase from the town itself or you could catch a bus as there is a stop nearby - it's the bus to Castelmola. It is a steep climb though so don't walk up in the middle of the day in the height of summer and make sure you have some water and a sun hat with you - thankfully we were just walking down afterwards. The tiny church was built into the rock around 1600 and there was a hermitage attached which is now abandoned - it doesn't look like much from the outside but it is beautiful inside. There is a small terrace in front of the church with amazing views over Taormina and the bay towards Giardini Naxos. I've based the length of the visit on the walk to get there as well.

Superb views.

I walked up the steps which at midday was a bit of a work out. The sights on the way up were superb as was a lovely little church built into the rocks at the top. Very peaceful and we'll worth the effort. Felt I'd earned my lunch.

Worth it

A high effort and high reward climb. Beautiful views with a particularly nice ending in a peaceful and spiritual place. I hope it stays that way

Worth the climb
Jan. 2020
Beautiful viewing, masterpiece stations and astonishing church structure built in to the rock. The stairs seem daunting but only the 100 are steep then they level out. Great landing to stop along the way and enjoy the views.

Worth all the steps to the top!
Oct. 2019
We walked up all of the steps to the top from the main street of Taormina, which took about a 30 min leisurely walk stopping to take in the view at points. The views were beautiful, even on a cloudy afternoon - you could see the Greek Amphitheater and out to sea and beyond on a good day. The church at the top was small but the natural rock ceiling was really unusual but looked beautiful. It's definitely worth the walk up!

Charming Church
Oct. 2019
We walked to this church (up lots of stairs from Taormina), but it was totally worth it - the views were spectacular and the little church is very moving.

See the rock ceiling of the church

I didn't climb the stairs, we were on a tour (small tour minivan, large tour buses can't get up there). The ride up is tense, overlooking the town. Next time I would likely take the steps. Worth the time to visit though. Fascinating old church with a country full of old churches.
