A beautiful old monastery tucked into the side of a mountain. It's very quiet and peaceful, they ask you to respect the silence while looking around. The areas open to the public are limited to the grounds, a small gift shop, and the tiny room where St Francis lived. We asked for directions at the tourist info in Cortona and... More

Just outside the walls of Cortona you will find a centuries-old monastery which still is home to practicing monks. It is a quiet and peaceful respite to wander through, enjoying the waterfall, gardens and historical facilities which housed St. Francis of Assisi for the years preceeding his passing. In the summer, there are occasional outdoor concerts under the stars, so... More

On arrival it is an unforgettable view. And thinking about the more than 800 years of history, make this place a real unique one. A must see ..... :)

Ancient monastery centuries-old ,near the city of Cortona and it attracts many visitors who come to see the old church and the room used by St. Francis of Assisi to pray and meditate, where he stayed almost until his death, Spectacular waterfall especially in winter and spring and landscaped gardens to take a pleasant hike.

Even in the off season one can begin to feel that the American 51st state, is possibly Cortona. The town is both enterprising and lively. So a car trip (or enthusiastic walk) to the hermitage above Cortona at Le Celle, is a splendid thing to do if you want tranquillity and beauty rolled into one. Even in the cold and... More

I would never have discovered Eremo Le Celle, but a friend from Cortona brought my wife and I here for a visit. It's beautiful. We were able to wander around and we were the only tourists within sight. It was peaceful. I cannot imagine why this place hasn't been overrun with tourists all times of the year. I'll definitely be... More

Just outside Cortona in the hermitage where St. Francis himself spent two years in contemplation. His cell remains as it was. And this little place of peace is perfect to focus on what is essential in life. No hustle and bustle. Just peace here...

Don't miss this hidden gem just outside the city. A truly peaceful and beautiful spot that most tourists miss.

I absolutely loved this place. Quiet, peaceful and absolutely beautiful. The waterfall after the rain put you in a spiritual place. We returned on our way out of town just for one last look and a little more peace. We went to mass on Sunday morning at 10:30. It was very simple and didn't at all cater to tourists. Everything... This was my second trip to Le Celle, the first being 3 years ago. Though I'm not Catholic, or particularly religious for that matter, this place exudes a calmness and sense of awe that was a contributing factor in my decision to return to Cortona. St. Francis of Assisi spent a good deal of time here and his "celle" is... More
