The area

Neighbourhood: Duomo

Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

Short shopping street in the city centre

This is a very short stretch of street linking Piazza de San Giovanni (north) to Piazza della Repubblica (south) in the city centre of Florence. You'll find retail shops and notable high end fashion retailers if this is what you are looking for. Otherwise, it is one of several north-south shopping streets in between the popular Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria areas.

Nice stretch of street

Via Roma is not a long street. It stretches from the Duomo area, Piazza di San Giovanni, to Piazza della Repubblica. It is full of nice architecture, fashion shops and cafes as well as other types of shops. We enjoyed our walk on this street. We walked along Via Roma a few times and it was a pleasure. It's in the city centre, and close to the Duomo, the Piazza Repubblica, and other nice areas.

High-end Shop, Low-end Service at Luisa Via Roma

On a recent business trip to Florence I went for a stroll in the central shopping district and was hoping to experience the traditional great service I had always enjoyed in Italy in general and Florence in particular. It wasn’t my first visit to Luisa Via Roma either, I had bought lots of items from them over the years, both on my visits to Florence and on line. The prices have always been high but the service was good and I liked the choice as well. This time however, I had a totally different experience. Possibly due to the fact that they seem to be focusing a lot more on their on line sales, the choice was very limited indeed. One possibility was to select an item on a big screen and have it delivered to the shop the following day BUT the idea of visiting an actual physical shop is all about trying stuff on and being able to touch and see the merchandize. The staff were rather unfriendly and unhelpful. I finally decided on a purchase anyway (and was even toying with the idea of coming back for more the next day). When I enquired about the price of a particular item the shop-assistant told me there was a 40% discount. I had not asked for a discount and would have most probably made the purchase anyway. However, I was given a different price at the check out and the ensuing conversation was to say the least surreal. I was blamed for misunderstanding the price and then the shop-assistant in question was summoned and reprimanded in front of everyone. All I can say is, that is NOT how customer service works. I walked out of the shop without buying anything and will most certainly not be going back again!
Luckily for me, I had another business trip (to Paris) only a week later and made my purchase there. I was happy to pay the full price for the same item but a much better service.

The central street

The central street of the city connects two of its most important squares, the Piazza di San Giovanni and Duomo with the Piazza della Repubblica. The elegant street with imposing buildings is a nice walk among some of the greatest attractions of Florence, where you can also visit a bunch of fashion shops or drink an excellent coffee in one of its bars.

If you are staying at the Villa Cora you know this area well. Their shuttle bus will pick you up in front of the caricature artist and bring you back to the hotel. Lots of shopping and AL-fresco dining available.
