This fascinating natural history collection can be traced back to the Medici family. Full of taxidermied animals of all types, skeletons and wax anatomical models, it is a must for the curious, as well as science and history lovers.

Forget 90% of this museum, it is a rather ordinary and tired exhibition of stuffed animals. However, the large exhibition of human anatomical models made out of wax is fantastic. The detail and workmanship is stunning. If you wish to know how the human body...More

Hundreds of beautifully made wax anatomic models from the 18thC. Hard to believe they are manmade, all the nerves and vessels are perfect. Some models are quite gruesome. The other part of the museum has taxidermied specimens of pretty much every animal on the planet....More

For anatomy nerds, La Specola is a must....this was one of my favourite museum experiences in Italy, along with the visit to Museo di Anatomia Patologica Taruffi in Bologna (also highly recommended). A good way to get away from the crowds too... it was relatively...More

At only six euros entry, this museum is a bargain. It's a bit quaint, some of the exhibits are hilarious, but the wax body parts section is compulsive viewing. Well worth a visit and best of all not too crowded!

If you have more time in Florence than most and want to see something historical but unexpected, this is your place. Admire the old taxidermy on the animals as you climb your way to the anatomical wax figures. And buy the postcards!

This museum is one of the best I have ever been too. It starts with a collection of preserved animals, insects, fish and reptiles to name but a few. After this there is the wax section. This is spectacular and must have taken years to...More

From animals and bugs and fish and birds to the coolest wax anatomical figures (last room is pregnant and babies but easy to skip with our youngest). Really cool and nice diversion beyond the Pitti Palace.

What a cool museum. It gives you a glimpse into the sciences of the past. The taxidermy was amazing and the anatomical wax figures were mind blowing.

As we like the odd museum we loved this one. If you like stuffed animals-some badly stuffed years ago - and you also want to see a wax work human body dissected divided and bits of wax body realistically displayed from the 18th century, then...More
