Piazzale Michelangelo
Piazzale Michelangelo

About
This neoclassical-style piazza built by Giuseppe Poggi in the 19th century offers some of the best panoramic views of Florence's historic center. The plaza is also home to several replicas of Michelangelo's famous sculptures, including David and the Medici Chapel statues. To get to the piazza, you'll need to climb up a steep hill, but the unobstructed views are worth it. Sunset is a popular time to visit when the plaza is bathed in golden light. You can take a taxi or car tour up the hill, or for a unique experience, pass by the piazza on a Vespa tour through Tuscany from Florence. – Tripadvisor

Top ways to experience Piazzale Michelangelo
The area
Neighbourhood: Piazzale Michelangelo
Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!

    Amazing views of Florence
We liked Florence a lot due to so much art present in the city and Piazzale Michelangelo was our favorite place in the evening to view the whole city. It was a spectacular view and we went not at sunset but few hours before that. So, we avoided the crowd as well. The place was lively with some live performance going on during that time.

    Great views of Firenze
Expect a mad house. Is it the best place to view the city from an elevated position? Close. You mostly have an unfettered view of the old part of the city from several different points. It’s a large plaza with kiosks, tourist trinkets, drinks and snacks all over the place. You need souvenirs? Check. Beer? Check. Gelato? Check. In all seriousness, it’s a spectacular view. We actually preferred the views from the steps of the Basilica San Miniato al Monte nearby just a little bit.

A must! Beautiful place for sunset.
An absoloute must! We got up there about two hours before sunset and it was already quite busy but got packed very quickly after. Great atmosphere. Take a drink, some food and get chatting to people. Sunset was just beautiful. A must do!

    Wonderfull Views to be had
Certainly one of the top things to do in Florence and once you arrive you will not be disappointed with the views. Bit of a walk and hike up hill to get to lookout but it’s nothing to strenuous, just take your time. With the elevation you can see the whole of Florence and get to pick out the top tourist site, also is a replica of statue of David that also good to see:

Totally worth the climb (it's not that far)!
It is neither far nor difficult to climb up from the city via quieter side streets, and it is well worth the effort. You will be rewarded with a breathtaking and unforgettable view of Florence's most famous buildings and bridges, as well as the surrounding mountains. Suggest doing this in the morning, before the sun becomes too hot. Additionally, the coffee on the viewing platform is excellent.

The best views of Florence - totally free !!!
The views are amazing and totally free if you walk and very cheap if you take the bus. We went on a very hot day 36 degrees. It was too hot to walk so with the help of our holiday rep took the No 13 bus. The No 12 also goes up there. You need to buy your tickets before getting on the bus. There are machines around the city at most stops but it is best to get them at the railway station. They are 1.50 euros one way so we got four. The next step is that once on the bus you need to validate the ticket by putting it in a machine. The bus is a leisurely journey around the outskirts of the city. We did consider the hop,on hop off bus but at 29 euros each thought a bit too much. Once at the top the Piazzale is very exposed with little shade so you will need a hat. There are the usual souvenir traders who aren’t too pushy like in the centre. Then there are the views which are exceptional. We would love to experience it again to see the sunset but that will have to be another time. We got the No 12 bus back which just happened to go past our hotel.

    A quick Visit
A good point to see the overall view of Florence. Go as late as possible in the evening to avoid sunshine and heat. Can spend good 30-40 minutes have a beer and come back

    Great Atmosphere
We walked up to the piazza to watch the sunset and although we didn’t get to see it thanks to the clouds (and it would have been difficult anyway due to the HUGE crowd) it was well worth the climb as the atmosphere was fantastic. We ate our take away pizza and enjoyed a few drinks whilst watching the live music and enjoying the company of our fellow travellers. The views of Florence at night were beautiful - a night to remember!

    Amazing
I don’t understand the reviews saying it was crowded with thousands of people. There were at most 200 when I went in June. Perhaps it was quieter because it was lunchtime. The views of Florence are worth the visit, it is easy to get the bus here if you don’t want to walk

    Busy
Stumbled across this place whilst driving through. Great views over Florence. We came back to watch the sunset. Obviously stunning. But the crowds and jostling make it a very disappointing experience

It is a good hike across the river and up to the Piazzale Michelangelo from other sites, but it was worth the time as the views are amazing.

If you want a view of Florence, Piazzale Michelangelo is the spot to be. I first visited in 2014 and caught the sunrise, so we decided to do the same, 10 years later. Unfortunately, it was a bit cloudy that day but the city views were still nice to see. There isn't really any easy public transportation from the city centre so your options are an Uber, or a 30ish minute walk, and then you still have to hike up to the viewpoint. When I say hike, I just mean that it's a paved incline so if this isn't something you think you can do, the Uber can take you straight up there.

Not sure I'll return for a third visit, but if you've never been before, it's definitely worth checking out.

The best place to get the most wonderful view of the whole of Florence. We did get a taxi to the top but really enjoyed the walk down-which takes you through a beautiful rose garden. We also had drinks and ice cream in the café.

If you can walk early in the morning the place will be just for you. 8:00am is a good time in May. A beautiful view of Florence and Arno River will appear from different places during your way up and down. You will avoid turists and all the stands selling souvenirs. The quiet square and the open view are a worth it thing to do in a ahort stay in Florence. After that you can walk to Palazzo Pitti and go down to cross Pontevecchio almost empty. A miracle!

Beautiful place on a sunny day and the best view of the whole of Florence. The atmosphere and the position is what makes this square so nice although many others looks better.

Went early to watch the sunset from the steps and it was already quite busy. Lots of kids and young people. Lots of people smoking on the steps, which sucks for those who don't. Not sure why this is labeled as one of the best sunset spots - in January the sunset was not in the direction of the beautiful view of the dome - it was in the opposite direction. Still a nice and lively place to visit with beautiful views.

My family went there to get a few pizzas before the sunset at the famous hill in Florence. They welcomed us in and made us delicious pies. Had cold beer and let us use their clean restroom. Super nice and friendly staff. Chef is excellent.
