Santa Maria Novella is masterpiece of art. It is very near to the Florence station. It is 10 walk towards Market and this place. Mind blowing architecture. worth visiting. You will find lots of restaurants and bars in the Piazza. Don't miss Gelato shops for nice ice cream in summer.

Set just off the main street of the station, this square is a sunny spacious one in which to sit and people watch from one if the numerous pavement cafes.

This piazza was not in our agenda. Nor was the cathedral after which the piazza is named. Since directions to the entry of the Basilica was unclear we ended up at the piazza by mistake. And in case you do get into the cathedral your exit will be to the piazza. The piazza , though pleasing, is not a patch on... More

We were staying nearby in May 2012. Many restaurants nearby. Really large square with concrete benches to sit and relax. Some green space in the middle of the square. Enjoyed a gelato here on evening. Very nice area to be safe and enjoy a night out while in Florence. The next night, we went and checked out the tents from... More

Our accommodation looked over Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, so we saw the piazza in many lights from early morning to the beautiful sunsets. We saw and heard many buskers who were for the most part very talented. The piazza is a lovely space which affords well maintained paths and some garden beds, seating is located at various parts of... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
