Santa Maria Maggiore is quite an interesting church. It is rather plain to look at on the outside, but once inside it's a different story. It is ornate and contains some lovely features, with beautiful artworks.

Refreshing for Florence because you find real parishioners offering worship here. Not a museum church, the exterior is unfinished simple Gothic. On the interior, there are interesting frescoes that reveal a glimpse of the 11th century. Beautiful place to simply contemplate the centuries since.

Compared to the many sumptuously decorated churches of Florence this one is plain by comparison- but by no means is it bare. There are some lovely frescoes and art work, even if not by the more famous masters of Italy. As there's I still no...More

We only found this church as it is opposite our hotel When we finally went in we were amazed how beautiful it is on the inside, really charming and a proper church with candles lit, regular Masses and the statues and frescoes beautifully displayed. Worth...More

The Santa Maria Maggiore is a small unassuming church on Piazza Santa maria Maggiore in Florence. Less glamorous than her sister churches in Florence the Santa Maria Maggiore has lovely frescoes and artwork on the inside. Nice!

Santa Maria Maggiore is a great church in the hearth of Florence that will give you a different idea from the other "magnificent" churches in town. I will recommend this place first because is not really that busy as many other churches in town and...More

It is an ancient church, mainly medieval kind, beautiful but not as much as Santa Maria dei fiore. Jist get inside to feel the atmosphere.

Camera optional, 20-30 minute visit. Good for a rest but not a "must see". This 12th century church renovated into the gothic style in the 15th century is as classic as it gets for an Italian church. There are masses and functions during the day...More
