Three towers were added during the Medieval period and it was a strong fortification system up until the WWII bombing. The majority of the walls we saw were located in the marina where our ship was docked.

Port fortifications were built by the Florentine rulers to protect their port. Unlike other medieval Italian city states Florence was not on Sea. Livorno served as the Medici port.

Beautiful! The romance of a port, the smell of the sea, a labyrinth of scales and rooms. A sensitive experience, full of odours, sounds and spectacular views. The entrance is free.

This is the old fort at the port. Interesting enough to look around but we didn't spend a lot of time here. The new fort is also open in town.

This, the old fort, protected the port for many, many years. It is a most impressive construction, and well worth a visit.

Very attractive old fort located close to the port, we had a nice gentle stroll early evening, good fresh air and not crowded with tourists, a really relaxing time

It was a cloudy day in april, so we had the caste for our own. That way we could roam the fortress, trying which doors and passages were open. Have a look in old, partly demolished tunnels, relive history in the caves ans basements. And...More

Between the destroyed walls of the fortress it's difficult to imagine the past splendour of Livorno Port during Renaissance. Anyway, there're some interesting halls on the basements.

The (Fortezza Vecchia) Old Fort is just that old, and nothing else. Many places in Europe with old forts have converted them into useful areas for recreation or tourism and done well with it while preserving heritage. The old Fort here is kinda crappy and...More
