I was shocked when I came upon this statue while in Livorno. Its racist depiction is hurtful and shocking. It glorifies slavery and is extremely offensive. I hope that it can be taken down, to show that Livorno does not support this ideology. History can be taught without glorification of violence/oppression against people of colour.

As you walk through Livorno you might stumble upon this statue. On the one hand it is historical but on the other hand it is very upsetting. I’m not one to say that statues should be torn down but this one does not belong here anymore. Put it in a museum or something.

This magnificent and, to be honest, rather shocking at first site monument stands in front of the port of Livorno. The bronze statues of the Mori are so detailed they efface the marble statue of Fernando I, who is actually the winner in the battle.
I spend a lot of time there, just circling around the monument looking at the details. Go and find something yourself.

The one thing you notice when coming to an Italian city and Livorno is the same, is that they love there statues and there history and as I said as my heading it’s very interesting knowing the history of the Italian people.
Right now to business the shops are very nice if a little expensive most are designer clothing shops and as for the market WOW is the only word you can say because it has every kind of food you can ever ask for.
Now for the but... it’s a shipping port where big cruise ships dock so how about making the port a little bit cleaner and how about even a couple of souvenir shops so people would stop and shop in the city instead of going to Pisa or Florence.
Enough said.

I love the street art that many cities have and I wish we had more at home. It is a shame little new art is added anymore.

Only was able to see this monument from the tour bus....but our guide told us of it's significance to Livorno history.

An interesting monument that celebrates the overcoming of criminal influences in the form of pirates? A monument that celebrates the dominance over other cultures? A monument that could relate to slavery?

This is a very accessible statue with great significance to the city of Livorno. You’ll pass by it if you’re going into the city center. A guide will provide you with more information and history but you wouldn’t have to have a guide to see it.

The monument celebrates victory over the “pirate moors.” Important to remember that conflict with North Africans has been a continual theme in Italian history from Hannibal to Libya.
