We were on a cruise ship and had already 'done' Pisa and Florence so decided to explore Livorno. To be fair it was a Sunday. However the place was dead dead nothing much to see or do (typical European cobblestone streets, statues, town hall, town...More

We passed this statue often, every time we left or returned to our ship. The theme bothers me; slavery has an ugly aspect in American history and seeing the men chained up was more sad than anything else. But this was constructed in a very...More

The monument celebrates victory over the “pirate moors.” Important to remember that conflict with North Africans has been a continual theme in Italian history from Hannibal to Libya.

Monument sit in the Piazza Micheli in front of the hotel Gran Duca. From there you can see parts of 16 Th. Century Fortezza Vecchia. Monument depicts the duke Ferdinand I with four Moorish slaves reminder of Livorno’s slave market.

Monument located in the marina area of the city of Livorno. Apparently it depicts conquering pirates but looks more like a sick glorification of slavery to me.

I suspect this statue was erected as both a celebration of a great victory and as a reminder to always be vigilant against threats. In this day and age, it is a brutal reminder of has happened before should never happen again.

One of the most important monument in Livorno. You have to known a little bit of history to understand the place.
