San Michele in Foro is one of my favourite places in Lucca. It is bang in the town centre, an excellent meeting place, often buzzing with people, but keeps an airy feeling thanks to a big open space and a lovely arcade by its side....More

This beautiful church is built on the site of the ancient Roman forum. The wedding cake facade is topped by the Archangel Michael slaying a dragon. The coolinteriorcontains the " Madonna and Child" by Robbia. Opposite the church is the home of Puccini.

I’ve never seen a church or cathedral with a top quite like this. Extremely high yet with no depth to it. Absolutely unmissable if you go to Lucca. Highly recommended
