Best view of the surrounding area

Short walk, short climb, best way to see the arrea around this wonderful hilltop town. Better than going up the bell tower. Brring your camera.

Walk from Piazza del Duomo via Piazza del' Erbe for wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Well-preserved fortifications give a good idea of "medieval fortified spaces". The Vernaccia di San Gimignano wine museum is well worth a visit - try the wine, it is excellent.

We were walking around and stumbled upon the Roccca. There is a little tower you can climb for great sky line views. We felt like children on an adventure exploring a castle.

This is the remains of a wonderful fortress to climb up onto the walls to admire the view. This is the sort of place children think of as a proper castle

Through a recommendation we hiked up the hill to get to Rocca of Montestaffoli and the views from the top were worth the walk. There were a number of small artists along the way that were painting and had some works of art on sale. Make sure to hit the view spot and take some beautiful photos of the Tuscany... More

Don't pay to climb the towers that dot the skyline. This fortress west of the Piazza della Cisterna offers free views and the best panoramic of the city. Definitely a must-visit while in San Gimignano.

The Rocca of Montestaffoli is the rock / hilly outcropping of the old Fortrezza of San Gimignano. You'll walk up the winding cobblestones behind the central Duomo and past the stone walls of the Fortrezza to the top level. From there you can see the city, the towers and a panoramic view of the Tuscan countryside. TIP: same views as... More

While enjoying our lunch in Sam Gimignano, we had planned to visit the Torre Grosse (Tall Tower) and pay the fee charged by the city to climb it and enjoy the views. However, I turned the page in my Frommer's guide and read about La Rocca! This is a fort behind Collegiata/Duomo and is well worth the extra steps. It... More

Just in top of the town hill with a fantastic view on the countryside. A visit is suggested expecially from the villa court.

The Rocca is a short hike up from the Duomo, signage indicates the direction. From the top you have a great view of the town as well as the Tuscan countryside.
