…I'll start by saying that I only saw this beautiful church dedicated to Santa Maria di Provenzano from the outside!!…which is located right in the square of the same name!!…in Siena!!…it is said that there are important works inside!!… among this also the flooring placed in the direction of the dome!!...in marble with the Medici coat of arms in the centre!!...on the main altar you can also see the drawing of the Madonna of Provenzano!!...a curiosity is that every year the squad of Madonna di Provenzano is brought to Piazza del Campo on the occasion of the Palio on July 2nd!!...and after the race the winning district brings it back to the Church to thank!!...the Virgin of Provenzano!!...this Church dedicated to Santa Maria is very beautiful of Provenzano in Siena!!…

Beautiful church already from the outside on the large square in front, with interesting works of art inside and also historical relics. We are in the Giraffe district but the church is a sort of neutral territory as it is the focus of the July Palio to which the Madonna of Provenzano is linked. Certainly before and after that event there is a particular atmosphere and everything is more animated. Still worth a visit the rest of the year. Free admission.

Tucked away off the main streets near the San Sebastiano church, this can be easily missed but still worth a look. With so many wonderful sights in Siena, churches like this can be overlooked but it would be a shame to miss this one.

This is one of the most beautiful churches of Siena close to Via dei Rossi and you shouldn't miss it!

This beautiful church with a marble facade was built in a Mannerist design with a Latin cross format between 1595 and 1611. It was built as a Marion Shrine to a 14 century terracotta icon of the Madonna, the Madonna di Provenzano, around which it is believed several miracles have occurred. The icon is now housed in a special case on the main altar of the church.
The Palio held on the 2nd of July each year is called the Palio de Provenzano in honour of the Madonna di Provenzano.
The church itself is beautifully decorated with many frescoes and paintings in the 4 chapels, 2 either side of the main altar, the apse and the nave. The cupola has frescoes of the 4 saints of Siena.
We have been inside this church on several occasions and still see something new on every occasion. On our last visit we were lucky enough to be there when a concert was being held by a youth orchestra from Calabria. The orchestra and singers were excellent, as was the acoustics.
The church is located in the territory of the Giraffa Contrada and therefore was covered in Giraffa flags following that Contrada's win in the 2 July 2017 Palio.

We wandered around Siena and stumbled across this jewel. There were only two people inside so we had it to ourselves. The basilicas in Italy are so amazing but that being said, this was one of my favorite churches. It was smaller and although not as ornate as some of the cathedrals, had a wonderful charm.

We came across this beautiful place on our tour of many of churches on the day of the Palio. It was bedecked with Giraffa flags - who later went on to win the race ahead of our Aquila. Well worth a brief visit.

The church Santa Maria in Provenzano is located in Piazza Provenzano, not far from the basilica of San Francesco. It was closed when we visited.

We were just exploring the beautiful Siena aimlessly when we came by this beautiful little church. The older gentleman invited us in for a viewing and informed us that it is a museum to "Contrada del Lecorno (Unicorn)".
The chapel is used for the meeting and is filled with beautiful paintings and sculptures.
In the back you will find the museum to the contrada. It has the flags to the Palios that they have won in the past, their costumes, and objects for the Palio.
FANTASTICO.

The best time we had in Tuscany! We were taken aback at the beauty of the views, art and history. We would certainly return. Siena is magical.
