This is the church that St Clare and St Francis were baptized in. It has so much rich history! It is beautiful inside--- and so holy and blessed. There are ruins underneath that are topped with a glass floor -- something very unique to experience!
I was there for the feast day Mass, and it was such an amazing experience! Definitely a wonderful church to visit!
And the pizza place in that piazza is so amazing.

One of the oldest churches in Assisi. In the back left corner is a special chapel with a very old statue dating back to the 11th Century of Mary holding the wounded Christ. Go and sit in here for a while and feel your heart opening.
Under the Cathedral are the ancient ruins with exhibitions of works from the period.

Would you be a history aficionado? An imaginative time-traveller? Try passing by the impressive Duomo San Rufino in the heart of medieval Assisi during the hours of darkness and if you are just lucky, when the fog has already lightly enveloped the scenario. If you are really lucky there should be just a few cars spoiling the antique effect, and if you are a good shot with your camera you can also avoid including them in your photo. Of course I would recommend visiting the duomo itself by day light to appreciate the unspoilt ambience of the epoch and to get more familiar with the narrative and the lived environment of Santi Francesco and Chiara.

San Ruffino is the cathedral of Assisi - especially remarkable for its beautiful - austere and graceful - façade, and a spacious and light interior, where the baptismal basin where Saint Francis and Saint Claire were baptized almost disappears under flowers and an iron grille. I didn't see the museum, but they say is good.

Assisi is very busy but to find some inner peace visit here. It has an aura of calm that envelops you from the moment you walk through the door. It truly has an impact each time I visit.

It is a very nice place to pray in silence, since it a low-profile place , although AMAZING!
I advise God-lovers to go there and spend some time in silence.

Almost all visitors to Assisi will visit the Basilica di San Francesco, and many will visit the Church of San Chiara. Both are huge monuments erected in the name of two people who deliberately lived lives of poverty, and spread a universal message of peace. The decoration and excessive ornamentation of both buildings are thus are direct odds to the messages of the people they commemorate.
The cathedral in Assisi, is, in my humble view, a much more lovely church. It is where St Francis and St Clare were baptized.
There is an excellent museum and crypt.
Well worth a visit.

Whatever you are looking for or planning to do in Italy, you can find it in the heart of Umbria, Assisi. This medieval hill town, surrounded by spectacular valleys and mountains, is most visited pilgrimage destination. Assisi offers great sightseeing, dining, olive oil and wine tasting. There is entertainment to fit every taste and budget. I was fortune to stay in Assisi a few days last April. I enjoyed the Giotto frescos in the upper church of St. Francis Basilica before it was packed with tour visitors. Sunset views from my hotel room window or at Piazza Chiara by the Basilica of St. Clare kept me spellbound every night. My best discoveries were unexpected; I didn’t read about them in popular guide books or travel sites. If you spend a few days in Assisi, the cathedral of Rufino Crypt and museum is the place to go. The recently renovated museum exhibits works of Italian art of 14th and 15th centuries from Mason Perkins collection, the American art historian and dealer. The extraordinary collection of unique paintings of Sienese and Florentine masters was donated to the Franciscan Holy Monastery and the Diocese museum.

This is the Co-Cathedral of the Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino, dedicated to St. Rufinus of Assisi, who helped to convert this town to Christianity in the 3rd Century. His tomb can be found under the main altar. This church is not as grand, compared to the Basilicas of St. Francis, St. Clare and St. Mary of the Angels. Nonetheless, what is significant is that it was in this church that St. Francis and St. Clare were baptised. It was also here that St. Clare discovered her vocation after hearing St. Francis preached. Entrance is free (except if you are intending to go to the museum) and photo-taking is allowed.
