The gate is a short stroll uphill from the Marktplatz. It is quite ornate with different colored stone.

The Spalentor used to be one of the ancient gates to the city and you can still see the intricate carvings and designs from the medieval times on it - traders, musicians, gargoyles etc. It is a massive structure and it is a 20 minute walk from Basel SBB - just follow the main road signs. One of the 3 remaining entrance gates, and the most decorative one, supposedly as through this gate the French goods to the market passed. Well worth the walk to it (or a tramride).

Just outside of our hotel, this is a great landmark to see and also a stop for local trams. It was a wonderful welcome to the city and a nice place to take photos.

This gateway is in great condition and very easy to get to as there is a tram stop here. I loved the different colour tiles on the roofing.

Spalentor is worth a visit, more so at night when lit up. Just a short 3 minute tram (number 3) ride away / 3 stops from the main city centre. The tram stops right under the gates itself, so you don't even have to go out of your way to get there.

We walked to this tor, it is quite small, well kept and quaint. There is another one to see elsewhere in the city too.
