Around 735/736, southern German nobles founded a small monastery at the site of today's Hof area, which was dedicated to St Mauritius. Around 1135, the autonomous monastery was attached to the Provostship of Murbach (Alsace) and St Leger was named patron of the church. In 1291, the Abbey of Murbach was forced to sell the Provost's Church and its belongings to the Habsburgs. In 1332, Lucerne joined the Helvetic Confederation. By 1433, the City of Lucerne had regained its rights from the Habsburgs, including those affecting the mo- nastery. In 1455/56, the Benedictine monastery was converted into a convent of Canon Regulars. Since then, the Canon Regulars have devoted themselves to the Liturgy of the Hours every day in the mornings and evenings. On Easter Sunday 1633, the church was burned to its foundations. The Jesuit Brother Ja- kob Kurrer from Ingolstadt was charged with the reconstruction of the church. Its consecration took place after the installation of the art works in 1644.

The church is worth seeing. The inside as well as the outside are beautiful. There is also an old Swiss wooden house to the right of the church that is worth a walk around.

We just missed this to visit from inside. But the exterior of the Church is so beautiful, I am sure the interior will be even better.

This is one of the landmarks of Lucerne. It's a gorgeous church on the way to the incredible Lion monument. You can see it from almost anywhere in the town. It's worth a visit.

Stunning interior and place of contemplation whilst the world rushes by outside the door. When I visited a youth orchestra was playing and ended spending well over an hour in the place.

If you have been traveling Europe for a while, this church may seem small and less ornate than some of its bigger cousins but it does have beautiful acoustics. I was lucky enough to stroll through as they were practicing the pipe organ for the evening services and it was an inspiring moment to hear that grand old instrument let... More

Thank you for your visit. The organ was built in 1648 and renovated in the 19th century by Friedrich Haas and again in 1972/1977 by Orgelbau Kuhn in Männedorf. The 7374 pipes are distributed across 111 registers (and 5 manuals). Greetings from the Hofkirche Th. Lang More

We were fortunate enough to stumble upon the Hofkirche in the early evening just as a choir dressed in traditional Swiss clothing assembled on the front steps to yodel a few songs. It was a group of about 20 men and women who joined together in beautiful harmony. It was kind of magical. The church is beautiful and well preserved,... More

From the bottom of the steps you are greeted by the amazing exterior of this beautiful church, no sooner over that and you are swamped by the equally beautiful interior, take a seat and enjoy.
