The Abbey Library St. Gallen, famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. And it holds one of the most important manuscript collections in Europe, especially for the Carolingian and Ottonian period from the 8th to the 11th century. The collection is presented to the visitors in changing and thematised expositions. The library forms the central part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Convent of St. Gallen.

The Abbey library is indeed impressive. The only thing is that for international visitors who may not be familiar with the European history and/or religion, it would be great to have more multimedia introduction about the background and the collection.

The abbey’s large baroque-style library has an impressive medieval collection of manuscripts and books, and the most breathtakingly beautiful library I have ever seen. The library houses a total collection of about 170,000 books and other material. The woodwork is awesome, and it too has...More

Unbelievable library which has been very well maintained. Audio tours are definitely a plus. More than just a hold place for books, contains artifacts, excellent artwork and sculpture. Allow enough time to fully enjoy.

The manuscript samples on display -- many of which predate the year 1000 -- are magnificent. Just take your time and experience it. Don't miss the lapidarium in the cellar.
