No matter where we were on holiday, the Schaffhauser Alstadt is and remains our favorite place and home. It can compete with many tourist hotspots in all respects. Keep everything a little smaller and more modest, but all the more adorable, familiar and loving. Our foreign friends are also always positively surprised by what Schaffhausen has to offer.

A great old city, only walk road. Plenty of restaurants or shops.
Different monument to visit, the castle, the iwc museum.
The quai along the Rhein are great with such place to pic-nic or take the sun.

Tour Around The Old Street. Love the sculptures and buildings atmosphere. It’s in the border of Germany. Rest and relax in a cafe for a coffee break and snacks. A quiet and cozy small town to visit.

We went early on a Sunday morning and nearly had the whole old town for ourselves. Such a beautifully preserved medieval town. We took a map from the tourism center and followed the map around. We were able to see all the prominent buildings and their oriels using the map.

For an American, a very old city center is fascinating, but this is just one of many and not worth a special visit. It has some restaurants, not many open on Sunday, and few hotels.

The town is a short distance from the Rheinfall and has plenty of interesting stuff to see and do in its own right. The old town is a warren of streets, alleys and squares with churches, cafes, fortress and of course the river (which you can walk or cycle along if you're feeling energetic to undertake the 4km or so to "Europe's mightiest waterfall"). First point of call was the tourist office which is a good starting point for your visit and then followed the walking tour round the main sights. It was nice to spend time relaxing alongside the river near the ferry pier (for trips in the direction of Lake Constance) and then onwards to a cafe for energy replenishment! Preparations were underway for "Stars in Town" performances when we visited and so some parts were out of view/obstructed/screened.

Don't forget to keep looking up as you wander round as a lot of the interesting architecture is above head height!

We had a chance to spend a few hours in Schaffausen traveling by train from Zurich HB. The old town remains intact and well kept. The nearby Rhine Falls are also spectacular and well worth visiting. Beautiful quaint place.

Visited Schaffhausen after going to Rhinefall and Munot Castle - we arrived via car and managed to find a car park (parking meter - with coins) close to the Plaza . Great ice cream from a vendor cart and so just sat there and relaxed for the afternoon. We have seen many "old towns" and so rate this as ok but would recommend Enden as the best so far and not too far away but great place for a beer / coffee, etc if you are doing the same sight-seeing we did.
