About
Two spacious 75-passenger cabins transport you in comfort from Wengen to Männlichen. It takes just under five minutes to climb the 947 metres to Männlichen – precious time you can invest in admiring one of the world's most scenic mountain vistas. With a little luck, you might even see the thundering waters of the Staubbach Falls. Since it first opened in 1954, the Wengen-Männlichen Aerial Cableway has carried locals and visitors from all over the world year in, year out. Since 2018, you can even ride on our open-air balcony in summer. Take your place on the rooftop balcony of our new cableway cabin and feel like Queen Elizabeth II greeting her subjects. You might even be tempted to try out your best royal wave, but we'll leave that up to you.

Hop, Skip and Jump over a Mountain or Two!
Rather than riding the slower train, we opted for the gondolas from Wengen to Grindelwald, Then to Eigergetscher, Great time saver, and pictures speak louder than words... Breathtaking! We purchased a Berner Oberlin 4 day pass, includes most trains, buses, gondolas/cable cars, and a couple boat routes on Interlaken. We road 4 gondolas twice each in one day, plus multiple trains, and buses... the rides were excellent and timely.

    nice views and leisurely walks
We took the gondola up the mountain, and then walked to the viewing platform. It’s a leisurely 30 minute walk up to the platform, where we were rewarded with a beautiful view. Then we walked about an hour and a half to Kleine Scheidegg, where we caught the tram back to Wengen. That walk was also easy and leisurely. After three days of more challenging hikes, this was a nice activity to recuperate.

Easy, fast, beautiful, fun way to get to a peak experience
When settled in our Wengen hotel room, we noticed a large grey building across the street with some large wires coming out the back. Upon closer inspection, the wires appeared to go all the way to the top of the mountain ridge thousands of feet above and beyond. Then we saw the cable car/gondola descending on the wire and it all made sense. Next day, we went over and found that not only would the luftseilbahn aerial cable car take us up to the top of the ridge between Wengen and Grindelwald, there was a "royal" option to do the trip on top of the cable car, for an extra 10 Swiss francs. My wife, who is usually scared of heights, agreed to do this, and it was a wonderful experience. Silent, smooth, and exhilarating. The cable car lets you off at Mannlichen at the top, where there is a short but steep hike to an astounding panoramic view from the mountaintop. There is a restaurant near the cable car terminus, with outside seating, reasonably good food for not too outrageous prices, and a huge cow-slide and playground for the kids. From there, we took a pleasant mostly downhill hike-walk with stunning views of the Eiger and Jungfrau peaks and glaciers, continuing on a couple kilometers down to the Kleine Scheidegg train station, stopping to have a small lunch and beer on the terrace of a little restaurant, then taking the train back to Wengen. This is Switzerland at its best. Gorgeous nature, accessed with relative ease by non-imposing efficient technology and service.

PROS
* "Brilliant experience of gliding through the breath-taking mountain scenery
• Smooth quiet seemless comfortable journey- extremely organized, precision- operated
• Three minute walk from the Wengen train station
• Delivery to a central point on the Mannlichen peak
* Covered by the Berner Oberland Pass
• A CHF5 extra fee allows one to ride outside on the top of the gondola!!

CONS
• Frequency is maybe every 20 minutes?

“I VISITED THIS PLACE…”
… twice during the week and it was at least my third season of doing that

The five minute ride is simply “brilliant,” as we say in British.

This time, we did it twice, once to experience the cold snow and blizzard of 28 August 2023 and then two days later to enjoy a clear sunny hike of incredible panoramic mountain vistas.

My 30 year old son declined both times paying the extra CHF5 to ride on top. That was fine with me because i had done that at least twice previously.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Sure, it is covered by the regional Berner Oberland Pass and the ride on the roof of the gondola is certainly worth the CHF5 surcharge

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Sure

ADVICE
* Be sure to do this- it is a great experience
* Pay the extra CHF5 and ride on the top

My favorite place on earth. Big mountains and green valleys. August was perfect. The trains are so much fun as they climb vertically up the mountain. A ski area in the winter becomes a summer playground.

I come to TripAdvisor for advice on attractions, restaurants and hotels. This would be best categorized as a form of transportation, but I am rating this as an attraction.

As an attraction this is average. I wouldn't go out of my way for it. It's a pretty ride and has an upper deck such that people can ride outside, which is unusual. But it was pretty full at 9-930 when we rode up, and I wouldn't do it again unless I had a reason to be at the top.

As a form of transportation it's great though.

Skied down from our hotel (Beausite Park) to the Gondola for a ride up to the Mannlichen ski area. Easy access - if you want to take the gondola back down, a bit of an uphill hike in ski boots to get back to it.

We rode the cable car to go skiing with our whole family. There is so much ski terrain to explore! Some of us made a day of skiing down to Grindelwald, then taking the First gondola up and skiing there all afternoon, then taking the Eiger gondola back up and then skiing “home” to our rental chalet in Wengen. Other members of the family spent the day skiing nearby. Later we rented sledges and sledded down to Wengen from the top. It’s a winter wonderland with so much to do that is super fun.

We went up to see the views from the top and take photos of Wengen from above. It was a wonderful ride. Very impressive when you see yourself going up so high so fast.

At the top you see amazing views of the snow covered mountains and the valley below.

We did not ride on the top crown, but saw a few people that did.

We got a 50% discount on the tickets since we had the Swiss Travel Pass.

Definitely worth it. We will do it again.
