The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

Words can not describe the feeling. I can not say one more word about it. One needs to go and enjoy every bit.

We got the cog wheel railway from zermatt. It's quite expensive but it's cheaper if you have a Swiss half fare card. I think it's worth the price. We had a perfect day and it was very clear. Despite being August, there was a lot...More

The cable car and cabin ride to Gornergrat from Zermatt is most enjoyable and the views on a fine day are spectacular. The fare is not cheap but it is money well spent. The restaurant at Gornergrat provides an excellent spot for refreshment with magnificent...More

Beautiful scenery and a great hike down from the first train stop. We walked all the way down to town central, which was a bit ambitious. Filled water bottles at one of the streams and stopped several times along the way to take in the...More

If like us, you're not able to climb the Matterhorn, this funicular will give you the opportunity to enjoy glaciers and moutain, and even to see the charming marmots.

An amazing experience. Views spectacular especially of the Matterhorn. A must do. Different points where you can get on and off either to go walking or enjoy refreshments and the views. Loved it. M....Australia

It's THE spot to see the Swiss 4er mountain peaks. Very good view for to the Matterhorn and the Dufor spitze. Crowed at times and pricy - but worth the money to see the peaks. You could get off the train earlier and hike to...More

We would have had great views if the weather had cooperated. It was cloudy and windy but you could still see the beauty.

It is a cog railway rather than a cable car. It runs every 30minutes or so most of the day. There are also some 4 stops on the way up (and down) so you can walk some of the way and take the train for the rest. An afternoon... More

There wasn't any snow at the top of the Gornergrat but if you do the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise trip there was plenty of snow there. Free toboggan rides too! See my review of it. Hope you enjoy your trip.
