If you have the chance to stay in one of the hotels here in Old Town, please do so. It is such a historic and lovely place to explore. Just walk around the little cobblestoned streets and marvel at the historic buildings, churches, while also enjoying the hustle and bustle of "downtown". Don't also forget to head over the the lake to enjoy the scenery. There are lots of places to dine in or grab a drink or break in this area. Also, it is not a huge area that you will worry about getting lost. Very quaint and lovely area.

This is one of Zurich's' beautiful and touristic area in the city. The area is very lively with lots of restaurants, churches , shops etc. There are mainly winding and cobblestone roads in this area. You can get lost in for an entire evening just soaking up the vibes. You can sit at one of the many sidewalk cafes and have a drink or dine. Be sure to relax and enjoy the river and lower down on the southern en is Grossmunster church. Enjoy the medieval ambiance of this area and wear comfy shoes due to the many cobblestone roads

Niederdorf is a nice area set in Zurich old town on the left bank of Limmat river.
It's an old part of town with cobbled winding streets offering many cafes, restaurants, galleries and shops. At the southern end of it is the imposing Grossmunster Cathedral. Great area to explore on foot for a couple of hours.

Lovely walk through the alleys. This place is on the right bank of Limmat river and during your walk through the shops, the view of the Limmat river opens up every now and then between the shops which I felt great. Did not buy anything from here, just plain and simple walk.

The niederdof, low village in english, was the least developed part of medieval city with its beatiful old houses, historical buildings and the river.

Niederdorf is a part of old town located on the east side of Limmat river. It has the old town charm with cobblestone street, several quaint shops and restaurants. Certainly worth visiting.

Went there twice in the last few months to meet with out of town friends. I was suprised at how lively the place was now. It certainly has gentrified over the years: now there is Desigual, Lulu Lemon, expensive watch stores, etc. Met my friends in 2 nice places: Santa Lucia (pizzeria/Italian food restaurant) & Cafe Schober (traditional Swiss cafe). Definitely would take out of town guests walking through there as it has such a medieval town feel with cobblestones & traditional Swiss houses. And of course the Grossmünster with Charlamagne (Karl der Grosse) sitting on the façade with his gleaming gold crown is a must see for tourists.

Niederdorf is my favorite area to stay in Zurich and one of my favorite areas in all of Europe. It has an old world charm, being one of the older sections of Zurich. It's pedestrian friendly streets are filled with wonderful boutiques, restaurants, bars and much more. While many of these can be found on the main street of Niederdorfstrasse/Münstergasse, as well as the Limmatquai (along the river), many others are tucked away off winding side streets. Making it a fun area for a stroll. Quite a few of the restaurants have outdoor seating.
Changemaker is a favorite shop of mine, while Kantorei, Le Dézaley (for fondue), BarFüsser (for sushi), Pulcino (for Italian) and Mére Catherine are a few favorite restaurants.
The home of Dada and Kunsthaus Zurich with it's amazing art collection can also be found here.
If you're visiting Zurich, this lively area is a great place to stay and explore. There's accommodations in many price ranges.

It'll be packed with people and cafe seating, but it's part of the charm - this is one of my favourite spots in Zuerich, one that's easy to take for granted. Definitely be sure to walk the length of the medieval stretch, from Central all the way to Bellevue/Stadelhofen (past the Grossmuenster along Muenstergasse, Oberdorfstr., just keep walking 'til you run out of old architecture!), but also be sure to take the side streets - get into Neumarkt and Rindermarkt. There will be less crowds but just as nice buildings and alleys, and maybe some less-hindered photo-ops. There are many small, winding alleys that lead away from the Niederdorf uphill into residential areas - I highly recommend getting lost in there. Some really pretty 'secret' areas (i.e. Chorgasse is a nice little stretch of tiny front doors!).
Don't miss Baerenland on a spur of the Niederdorf (Marktgasse, downhill towards the river - it's near the LUSH, which you may smell! Condomeria is the landmark on the corner of Marktgasse and Niederdorf). Baerenland has FANTASTIC gummy bears and lots of free samples. And across the street from that is ChangeMaker, one of my most favourite stores in Zuerich (check out the card section, and this is a great place to look for gifts in general, too)!
Other favourite places along the Niederdorf (or close by) - Sternen Grill, which is back towards the lake and Opernhaus at the end of what I call "the medieval mile" (not technically the Niederdorf at all), is a great place to buy a (relatively) cheap bite of sausage, mustard and bread. The Odeon restaurant nearby at Bellevue has fantastic spicy beef tartar, and it's right at the edge of the medieval stretch. It has quite an illustrious history, too (from Dadaism-founding to Einstein-serving to local gay history). If you don't like tartar, it's good for other plates, too. ;) Neat Art Deco/Modern/Nouveau interior. Neat place. ;)
We also really like Johanniter, on the opposite end of the Niederdorf proper (by Central) for beer and schnitzel, and Rheinfelder just next door to that has "Jumbo-Jumbo" schnitzels and equally good beer - another 'cheap eats' place that is especially loved by young men with large appetites for "Schnipo und Bier" (Schnitzel-Pommes: schnitzel and fries).
If you're really hard-up for money, grab some snacks or groceries in the Migros along the Niederdorf (near the McDonald's). There's a little lunch area in there, and you can grab a light lunch (salads, hot pastries, fruit, this sort of thing) for relatively cheap. I say relatively... welcome to Switzerland! ;)

There is a Tram Stop called "Central" right there where the Niederdorf Strasse(=Street) starts. Also Zürich's Main Railway Station(Bahnhof) is only few minutes walk away.
