It is the tallest lighthouse in Europe (a little over 80 meters), visible from almost 50 km away!! It is reached by boat (aber boats).
There are 365 steps to climb to reach its summit, but the panorama that awaits us is definitely worth it.
Its interior (opaline walls) and staircase are absolutely beautiful.
The guide who introduced us to the history of the lighthouse (below!) was fascinating (and passionate!).
A must-do visit if you are in the region, even if the visit costs money (in addition to the boat crossing).

Magnificent experience as the visit to the largest lighthouse in the world built in cut stone with its 82.5 m, it is also the tallest lighthouse in Europe. Its interior is entirely covered in opaline. The climb of the 397 steps is very pleasant, you can take breaks on the landings where there are windows to admire the view. The guide who gave us the explanations before the climb was dynamic and very interesting. From the top we unfortunately couldn't enjoy the view in the distance because the lighthouse was surrounded by sea mist, we had the impression of being above the clouds, it was both frustrating and magical.

Nous vous remercions pour votre avis, en effet la brume peut frustrer mais donne un côté mystique sympathique au lieu.
A bientôt sur notre territoire !

Once out of the numbers (size, age, records...), one observation must be made: it is a superb site! As long as the sun is there, it's superb. For access, the launch (10 minutes each way) or kayaks (a little more). The grounds of the island are reserved for the development of wildlife in high season, do not hope to travel freely.

You take a boat for a short cruise to the island where this lighthouse is located then climb 365 steps to the top. It is really worth it - the view is spectacular and you get a feel for what life might have been like before lighthouses were automated.

The lighthouse is located on Île Vierge, located approximately 1.5 km off the coast of Plouguerneau; it seems that it takes its name from a chapel dedicated to the Virgin, built on the island by a group of religious people who had settled here, founding a convent.
A first lighthouse was built on the island, 32 m high, completed in 1845 and kept in operation until the beginning of the 20th century; however, its range of 14 nautical miles soon proved insufficient to guarantee the safety of the surrounding stretch of sea, and the idea of building a new lighthouse, taller and with a greater range, was therefore born. The works started in 1897 and ended in 1902, the year in which the lighthouse was activated; over the years it was electrified, its optics were progressively implemented, and finally it was totally automated.
The lighthouse, 82.5 m high, is the tallest in Europe and the tallest in the world made of stone; its range is 27 nautical miles (about 50 km). To reach its top you have to climb 397 steps, which spiral up the cylindrical wall of the lighthouse.

Time covered. Strong wind. Persistent rain. This is the weather that you might find, and that we found, when we boarded the boat for the excursion. It's worth it. Always

After thirty years, we came back for a few days. Although the sun was shy, the beauty of the environment made us forget its absence.

We didn't take the boat to get to the island but the view was already magnificent from the edge of the beach or from the terrace on which we had a drink.
