About
The Fries Museum is dedicated to Friesland and the Frisian people. Its activities revolve around the eleven cities that make up the province and the surrounding countryside. These include the Frisians' love-hate relationship with water, the search for what defines the typical Frisian character, and Friesland's place in the wider world. The freedom fighter Grutte Pier's sword; old costumes and clothing; treasures from the Frisian mounds; the legacy of Mata Hari, the exotic dancer who was executed as a spy at the end of the First World War; Gerrit Benner's paintings; contemporary visual art; and the film de Overval: together these objects tell the story of Friesland.

Very friendly museum which has done a lot to make the experience interesting especially in the corona time. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed the exhibitions which are located on two floors. Learnt alot about the area during the war and the history of the friesian people. Worth a visit!

Great touristy thing to do in leeuwarden

There is much to see from Frisian culture. We went specifically for the Viking Exhibit which was very interesting and we learned a lot! It was laid out beautifully as well. Highly recommend this place for your visit. Right in the center of leeuwarden in a beautiful building

"We Vikings" was rather superficial
Feb. 2020
During the first time we visited the Fries Museum, we saw the Rembrandt exhibition,we liked this a lot.

Now we saw the "We Vikings" exhibition. At the end of the exhibition we saw an impressive rebuilt Viking ship and most walls were covered with cinema screens, that showed different films of the sea. The information provided was superficial and sometimes contradicts the information about Vikings that is given in Norway.

After the Viking exhibition we visited the exhibition about the Frisian people but this was even more superficial with only pictures (most of people who do not come from Friesland). There was an old audio fragment with the different kinds of the official Frisian language, that was nice to hear out of a hanging earphone.

Entrance for children up to 17 years old is free. Adults pay 15 euro's

An interesting exhibition for families with small children as well as for young people and adults.

The ongoing exhibition in the Fries Museum is We Vikings. There are many families with small children here during this Sunday afternoon, who all seemed to be having a very good time. One entry ticket covered both this exhibition as well as the display in the Resistance Museum next to it (they are joined in the middle). It seemed a good way to spend a morning or an afternoon in this beautiful and modern building, which is within walking distance of the Leeuwarden Train Station, visiting both displays here at the same time.

A Highlight
Oct. 2019
This museum is a highight. It shows regular exhibitons about the (geographical) history of Friesland, beside special exhibitions. This very moment about The Vikings and The Frisians. Last years about world known artists with Frisian origin like Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema (born Lourens Alma Tadema). And about Mata Hari (Leeuwarden born Greetje Zelle).

Empty space and other cultures
Oct. 2019 • Couples
The exhibition missed a clear structure and gave overall the impression to be filled up with random exhibits that did not add a lot in terms of interesting context. Big parts of the museum missed any English translation.
Also chess does not originate from Scandinavia.

, Well laid out modern museum at end of a market square. Strong on history and
Frisian background including - traditional flood refuge mounds. There is also a
section on resistence in WWII.

Outside in the square are many food stalls including local cheeses. Numerous cafes are nearby.

Perfect!

Great museum with a wonderful display. I loved the sound effects in the rooms. It is too much so I would advise to come back another day and look at the rest. We did the part where they showed us the history of Friesland.
