The first city in the Netherlands we encountered the lack of ability to pay for a parking space. Not in cash or by credit card. Which made the ability to access the museum impractical.
Also, the museum refuses to credit the ticket price even though it is not accessible.

We only visited the exhibtion of Sunken Treasures. We saw an enormous amount of slightly damaged tableware that came from sunken ships, but it was not very interesting or nice to see.
The "Stijlkamer" is nice though and we can not comment on the permanent collection.

The Keramiek Museum Princessehof = The Ceramics Museum Princessehof houses one of the largest collections of not only Dutch but International ceramics and porcelain as well.
We went especially to the Princessehof in Leeuwarden to visit the very large exhibition 10.000 x Happiness! Auspicious Motifs on Chinese Porcelain. We really were astonished by the beauty and the splendor of the objects exhibited. All objects are from the collections of several Dutch museums.
To see this amazing collection, please hurry! This exhibition only runs till October 30, 2011! You really will be sorry to have missed this exhibition!

I don't have any interests in ceramics but, because I own a museumcard I could enter for free and thought that I might as well have a look. I am glad I did, because this museum is well worth a visit. It is located in a beautiful historic building where M.C. Esscher was born and Princess Marie-Louise von Hessen Kassel (the wife of the Stadtholder of Friesland) lived. In this historical setting you can see a lot of ceramics which is nicely displayed throughout the museum. What is also really good is that almost all the information is in Dutch and English (the Frisian museum could learn something from that). The ceramics is not only Dutch, but from all over the world. I would recommend this museum to everyone who happens to be in Leeuwarden. It's even worthwhile if you are generally not really interested in ceramics. Because it's a really good museum.

The king of the Netherland's is a descender from the Frysian Nassau's and they lived here.When William the fourth died, his wife(Marijke Meu) was living in this city castle. She also build a beautiful garden the Prinsentuin (garden of the prince) behind her house. In her house she could walk from her home right to the garden. Nowedays ther is a street between her house and the garden
The house is in itself very nice but where you come for is of course the ceramics.
The collection started with the collection of sir Hannema, he gave his collection to the museum
Later there came more and more but the chinese and japanese collection is still the hart of the museum.
Mostley there is a special excibition; at the moment it is the wonders of the Ming dynasty.
And when you are in Leeuwarden, there is enough to see in the city and the islands are not far away. take a bus and a boat and you are within a few hours in Vlieland Terschelling , Ameland or Schiermonnikoog

I decided to go with a few friend to a part of the Netherland where i hardly ever go to.. Friesland and to be more precise the biggest city Leeuwarden.
Friesland is relatively green with few cities, so when you just want to go to a town in that part Leeuwarden is the place to go to... it's old it has Canals and it has some museums of which this one appealed to me most as i like some types of pottery (it's real art).
The Price was not that high, only EUR 8,- and for that we were able so see a nice collection of Dutch and Foreign pottery and porcelain. There are all types of vases and other items suchs as tiles... you wouldn't expect it, but it is really worth to go and see such fine art, it's delicate work to make these paintings and forms... It got me so inspired that i decided to take a workshop pottery in my home towns of the Hague.

I like pottery. So we went to the Princessehof. For me it was a bit disappointing that here was so much chinese and Delft pottery and so less modern and Italian fayence pottery and all kinds of other pottery. Galleries offer more diversity. Go to Italy, Faenza museum. That is worth visiting!

Look, you don't have to be a ceramics and pottery buff to appreciate this great museum, which I think is rated as the best ceramics museum in the Netherlands and with good reason.....its awesome.
If only a passing interest you can peruse the exhibits in an hour or less, and for enthusiasts several hours but either way the range of exhibits pre, during and post the Golden Age of the Netherlands there's a vast array of material from Japan, China, Netherlands, Vietnam, & Cambodia.
The details and workmanship is extraordinary to say the least.
Only downside for me is the modern / contemporary exhibits.....outclassed and out talented by the centuries old artisans of the east.....I wouldn't waste your time on this bit!

Current Chinese collection (Ming dynasty) is really worth-while. They have a free audio tour. Take it; it's fun!

It's worth to travel all the way to Leeuwarden (some 75 km North of Amsterdam) just to visit this Museum. Exhibition in two compact floors (third floor is Contemporary Art). The European selection is fantastic. They keep also Japanese and South American objects in the warehouse...ready for our next visit.
