One of the most fun museums out there.
I has been a while since I was here, and I was surprised and delighted; I was expecting nostalgia and I got it, but this museum has moved with the times. It used to be a pretty picture of our romantic bucolic rural past; but a limited representation of society. Effort has been made to include exhibits that reflect the more diverse, urban and recent development of Dutch society. And the museum is still expanding, with a major exhibit ("doorzonwoningen") still under construction.

Possibly better than an actual time machine.
My favorite museum, bar none. If they ever figure out how to make a time machine, there might be something to rival this. But until then, this is the most convincing way to travel back in time and discover history. The park is stunningly beautiful and the attention to detail is simply amazing. The museum offers houses, windmills, workshops, factories, farms and other buildings from all over The Netherlands. Most, if not all, are the actual original buildings - deconstructed in their original location, brought to the museum and painstakingly put together. Hardly anything here is fake or reproduced, which adds to the experience. Most buildings are accessible and it really feels like you're walking through an town ages ago and just walk into someone's home at times. Depending on when you go (more chance in weekends and high season), many buildings are occupied by 'volunteers' either making something or just walking around and 'living' there. We entered a kitchen in a farmhouse, where a lady in time-appropriate dress was minding her own business and making coffee and soup on a coal stove. Out of nowhere, she offered us a cup and before we knew it, we sat in a 150+ years old kitchen, having coffee while chatting with a lady about 'her' house. Fantastic. But even without these volunteers, there is more than enough to see, touch, smell, hear and experience. There's little that break the immersion, and if there is, it's usually because there's something interesting to learn through interactive presentations. I loved the focus on Indonesians in The Netherlands, as it is an oft forgotten or ignored chapter from our national history. I learned a lot. And sometimes a wave of nostalgia hits like a brick. Standing in a '70s interior in a small row house, looking at some furniture items you recognise from early childhood, hearing a news bulletin on the radio from Feyenoord winning the European Cup and realising: these were my parents when they were young....just priceless.

A real gem. Magnificent view on times past and Dutch history. Do yourself a favor.
Well we went back to the Openlucht Museum after many years and saw many changes , all for the better, it was already a magnificent Park, it even better. Located in a lovey landscape and forest, see Dutch architecture from the past and swim in the history of the past. If you cannot walk the park there are free trams that run every few minutes. It is a charming park for the whole family and gives you a great insight into what this small country has to offer. We were also happy to know that you now can take your dogs with you and into the properties, unless a posted sign say you can't, we went into everything. If your in Amsterdam or The Hague, its an easy hour and Half +/- a few minutes and easily reached. This is well worth a visit and the staff are friendly and knowable , and is some of the houses etc there are staff there in costume to explain how things work etc, which just adds to the great experience. Go on experience this, you will not be disappointed, fun for the whole family , young and old, easy access with prams wheelchairs, etc. excellent restaurants, etc. It is magnificent.

    An Absolute Must Visit
What an amazing museum/experience! It is such a large site that you'll be kept busy exploring it for the majority of the day! Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for an insight into learning more about everything Dutch! (Photo was part of the view from where we were sat enjoying our lunch on-site)

Great day out but a bit pricey if you’re a family with older kids.
Really interesting park with a fabulous display of buildings and objects from the history of the Netherlands. A hop on hop off tram can take you around the different sections if you wish. A bit pricey for a big family and the car parking is extra.

    Amazing self guided experience
This was an amazing experience. As two adults we spent 6 hours here and only saw maybe 60% of everything. Could easily spend 2 days here. There's a ton of information everywhere and you can really individualize your experience and see what interests you the most. In the middle of the park there is a small recreation of a Dutch town that has different foods, like french fries, waffles, ice cream, etc. There's an amazing exhibit that is downstairs of the entrance building. This level exhibit is all about Dutch history from the past 2,000 years and has what seems like an unlimited amount of interactive stations. Unfortunately we didn't leave enough time for this but could easily go back for another day.

Very disappointing for almost 20 euros per adult. When traveling outside the highways in the Netherlands, this type of mill or house is easy to see. Moreover, since I avoid taking my car in the cities, I moved from one city center to another city center without problem and for a very affordable price. This museum is 4 km from the center of Arnhem and I took a taxi: 20 euros and without a taximeter - very abusive! and I came back by bus and it was complicated when you don't speak the language. We can do without this museum because there is much better to do

It is very nice musea, old style houses, mills, farms of various parts of Holland. Especially the ‘Indisch Achtererf’ telling the story of also my family which had to leave indie ( now Indonesia) after the 50’s. Changing there motherland for Holland. Would be nice if this part also sold Indisch food, risolles, lumpia , bapao, nasi/ bami goreng, Soto, emping, sambal, saté. So really back in time in the kitchen of your home/ family
- negative points
Restaurants, only pan cakes, sandwiches.

But average, very nice musea, cheap and trip nostalgic in Holland

This beautiful open air museum spread out over a vast landscaped area , where the recent history of the Netherlands comes together (meaning the last couple of centuries), should be mandatory for everyone living in the Netherlands and strongly advisable for every foreign tourist. In no other museum is the Dutch culture present so strongly. Personally, my heart melts when I take a ride with the old RET tram from Rotterdam round the museum; the tram (of course not exactly this particular tram unit) I remember from the time I was a small kid). Entrance for a fee. Free entrance with the annual Dutch museum card. Fixed daily parking fee. This fee isn't waived for the museum card holders. This museum is emphatically to be recommended.

The Netherlands Open Air Museum is a nice, informative museum that primarily focuses on buildings, and the activities & people they house dating from the 1800s up to the current era.

However, it might not be a great museum to visit if you are looking for activities for children to participate, maybe due to the COVID-19 restrictions currently in place. But if you like to learn about the history behind these buildings, people and their activities, it's definitely a must-go. The fact that it is open air also helps as you could bask in the summer sun while visiting!

We found this place quite by accident whilst looking for things to do in the area whilst on holiday and I can honestly say it was one of the highlights of our holiday. It is a living museum showing the history of Dutch farming, craftsmen and lots more besides. The majority of the buildings are original and have been relocated to this place from their original sites throughout he country, some of which were over 100years old. There was so much to see and do, lots of beautiful windmills and and there were signs in English explaining the history of everything. There was an ice rink as it was winter and a fairground with lots of little stalls selling things to eat and drink. A old style tram was available to go around the place if you didn't want to walk. An amazing place which we would definitely go back to.

The Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem, The Netherlands, is not top notch but good enough for a relaxed visit. My wife and I took a day-return train ride from Amsterdam to Arnhem, then took No. 3 bus to The Dutch Open Air Museum. As the open air museum is spread over a large area, we took the tram (included in the ticket price) and made 2 stops to visit nearby sights and decided to walk the rest of the area. See photos attached for some of the sights.

Hi guys.
I can honestly say this museum was the highlight of my birthday party. It is a living museum showing the history of Dutch farming, craftsmen and lots more besides. The majority of the buildings are original and have been relocated to this place from their original sites throughout the country, some of which were over 100years old. There was so much to see and do, lots of beautiful windmills A classic Chinese restaurant. A brewey. An old style tram (that covers the area) was available to go around the place if you didn't want to walk. Nice sitting areas. Food, french fries, drinks, beer and soft drinks, tea, coffee. To help disabled they have mobility scooters. A kindergarten. My grandchildren liked it a lot. The usual shop as you leave has many interesting things to buy an not too pricey.
A really good place for young and old to visit. We loved it. And we are old farts

Spent the day here. Great place made even more special by docents who took time to explain how things work. Learned so much. Saw many windmills in the Netherlands, finally understand. Thank you for taking the time.

What a beautiful place to visit, even on a cold day. We could easily spend an entire day here.
We were lucky enough to have a tour with Mandy and Paul who were knowledgeable about the area, and happy to give ideas for other trips for our week in Amsterdam.
The exhibits are beautifully cared for and it feels as though you have stepped back in time.
The pancake house looked incredible, and smelt even better, with incredibly kind and helpful staff.
The surroundings are stunning and peaceful - perfect for a day out with the family: there are fun interactive exhibits for the children to take part in, as well as marvel at the beautiful surroundings.
We can’t to visit again.
Thank you Mandy and Paul!
