Interesting look into the jewish faith and the 2. WW. Guided tours provide at fixed times of the Day. You Can also walk through on your own. Not all displays are in English. 3 € entrance fee.

An opportunity to be able to visit this building. The information available was quite detailed and I was free to wander around this active place of worship. Guides were available but the timing of my visit did not enable me to take advantage.

We checked out the building as part of the World Press Photojournalism Awards display. The display only utilized 2/3 of the ground floor. The building is a wonderful arabesque synogogue modeled on the Great Synogogue in Berlin. A demonstration of the importance of the Sephardic community in the Netherlands prior to the Shoah.

Quite interesting architectural style with a very serene and warm surrounding. Interior elements of decorations and artifacts are very interesting and intriguing. Definetly a must see while in the Old Town.

Entering the Synagoge brings you into the atmosphere of the early 20th century immediately. There are very good guides who can tell you everything about the life of the jewish community in Groningen before worldwar II. Guides and other staff are all volunteers and they do a great job!

This building stands out from the outside: an architectural landmark. We did not see much of the interior as it was closed (but with a fence, so we had peek)

Groningen has a larger to smaller Jewish community over the centuries. Due to WWII with the grueling holocaust most Jews from Groningen could not return, as they were murdered. Of the few surviving ones quite some emigrated to Israel. This synagogue was built in 1905 in oriental style by a protestant architect named Tjeerd Kuiper. It was opened for services in 1906. After the war it was neglected and during my childhood a commercial laundry shop was operating in it. Only in 1980/81 it finally was restored to its beauty. Sometimes there are art exhibitions in it. Then the part fo the synagogue is not open to the public. For a tour of that, it is very worthwhile the trouble to look at internet for opening hours to book a guided tour.

We opted to have a guided tour, as we don’t know much Dutch. Simon provided an excellent tour through the synagogue, beginning with a bit of history about the building, then progressing through a discussion of a Jewish Shabbat service (as it remains a working synagogue). He concluded with a discussion of the Jewish community in Groningen and its decimation during WWII. We found it a very interesting experience- time well spent. Definitely a good place to spend an hour or so when you are in Groningen.
