The northern Maritime Museum is situated in two beautiful medieval buildings in Groningen. The museum shows the history of the ship transport in the north of the Netherlands and the history of Groningen. Additionally, you can visit changing art and history exhibitions throughout the year in our museum. To know how Groningen looked like in the Middle Ages, you can view the special virtual reconstruction of medieval Groningen.

Fascinating history of Groningen and the importance of shipping of all kinds since the earliest archaeological records. Set in a pair of historic buildings over many levels. There is a leaflet/guide in English but a little Dutch helps here. It is like a museum should be - full of maps, paintings, objects, displays and models for the visitor to discover.... More

We've been to several maritime museums in the Netherlands and while they all house many similar exhibits each has a local slant and this is no different with good insights into Groningens past maritime history. Helpful staff, and some fantastic diesel engines on show...if you like boats and boat history you'll love this place.

The Northern Maritime Museum is perfectly located in the old city of Groningen. It is very short distance from a major canal, so the location has the perfect atmosphere. The museum is in a collection of old buildings and the logical "path" through history flows between buildings and floor to floor. There are some highlights, include a superb collection of... More

It’s a museum about ships. Mostly. What more to say? Well, this is Holland and they take things that float very seriously. So there's a Dutch Barge outside to admire and even though all of the inside is in Dutch (leaflets you can take round are available in other languages) there's still a lot to learn and see. Plenty of... More

Perhaps you are not the person most interested in maritime history, but then you should visit this museum just for the building itself! It is old (and newer combined). Parts of it were developed in an era that Dutch people were much smaller then nowadays. A lot of visitors - say everyone over 5 foot 6 inches - should pay... More

I visited this place during a rainy day in Groningen. It tells an interesting naval history of Groningen that is finished with a small exposition of old machines. You can get an information leaflet in English that tells the main story line.

This was one of the better attractions we found in Groningen. Although all of the information is in Dutch, we were able to get a good understanding of the story being told (even if we missed some details). A very interesting and varied collection. We enjoyed the attached old buildings that make up the museum as well.

We visited the museum with our 2 children (ages 5 and 8) while on a day trip to Groningen. The museum is convenient and centrally located, and the exhibitions take you through the historic set of buildings and rooms that make up the museum. We don't read Dutch, but still found it enjoyable. The staff gave the children a booklet... More
