As the largest public square in Maastricht, Vrijthof square is located right in the heart of the city, surrounded by some of the city's most historic heritage buildings dating back to the era coinciding with Maastricht's pivotal role as a religious centre and military fortress, including the Romanesque Basilica of St Servatius (Sint-Servaasbasiliek), the Gothic Church of St John (Sint-Janskerk) with its distinctive red tower, and the Military Guard House (Hoofdwacht). Formerly a burial site during the Roman period, this tree-lined square with underground parking is now a popular gathering and leisure spot as well as an important cultural hub, featuring various summer concerts and other public events. Though not the most beautiful or vibrant square that you would have seen or experienced, the 2 imposing churches are enough to draw you to this place.

A wonderful evening spent at the Vrijthof a few days ago listening to Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss orchestra. The concert was first class with several guest artists as well as a "bull" run! A thoroughly enjoyable concert which was not only inspiring it was also great fun.

A very nice square, which also houses some sculptures and fountains. To this is probably also the place where Andre Rieu gave concerts (so it is remembered to us).
In the immediate vicinity sufficient cafes and what the touri somehow, not needed or but.

The concert with André Rieu fully met my expectations. Missed the bagpipes, which give total goose skin. At the big screen on the left, you should soon "fall a tree" as it covers over 1/4 of the screen. We were also past the place where André Rieu lives.

During Andre Rieu there was a ridiculous policy at the toilets. During a performance you were not allowed to return to your place and during the end piece (which lasted half an hour) you were not allowed to go to the toilets! If they organize this in multiple places, everyone can go to the toilet without hindrance. I haven't seen any emergency exits marked anywhere. Too bad!!

The Andre Rieu concert in Toronto was our first and probably our last. The schmaltzy performance and tireless pandering made us feel like we should be somewhere else or we had gone meshugana. The inclusion of gospel, movie and disney tunes just added to the circus-like evening. On a bright note, Verdi's aria and the entrance of a clan of bagpipers added a bit of unexpected levity and pomp. We had hoped for an evening of classical music and operettas but this was not to be. We suggest carefully reading the advertisement for the show before committing to purchase tickets and be prepared for an onslaught of shameless advertising of future shows and trips during the intermission.

This concert is a must do in your lifetime. Everyone thoruoghly enjoyed it, though we were all very tired at the end as it was nearly midnight. We were on a River Cruise and so had a ten minute walk to and from the boat - a good decision as all the hotels and restaurants were fully booked in the July season of these concerts. Ours was the penultimare one of the season but the enthusiasm of the all the performe was sill very evident.

We went to see Andre Rieu in Chicago last night. Excellent in every way from their grand entrance to the flowers on the stage. Andre was on his game and embraced the crowds. When the bagpipers marched down the center aisle I lost it! Perfect and very dramatic! When the black gospel singers joined him on stage, it was unreal! Perfect blend of classic, old world, today and tomorrow all enrobed with music! Must see! Yes, it does need a huge venue. Go. Jacqueline Gillam Fairchild Wolke

After a 3 year delay we got to see 'Andre' in The Vrijithof. It's a unique experience with lots of new material and some old favourites. Despite cancellations new tickets were issued with delay. The total atmosphere is unmissable and all embracing. We travelled by train via Eurostar/Brussels/Liege and Maastricht.

Visited pre Xmas to watch André Rieu “Christmas in my home Town concert” spent 3 wonderful days there. Vrijthof square was packed with Xmas stalls, food outlets and even an Ice skating rink. The whole old town was full of Xmas lights and music. Absolutely magical. Plenty of places to eat good quality and a wide variety of food. English was very well spoken by all the locals that we interacted with. Parking was very good. Will go back there at any opportunity
