We visited the Zonneberg cave including the Museum at 12:25 and in the afternoon at 15:30 the caves North including the vault. We parked the car for free at the end of the Ursuline road and walked through beautiful nature on the hill to the entrance of the Sun Mountain cave. The meeting point was well signposted and our Guide Frank was punctual. The caves were very interesting and our Guide knew a lot to tell (which was sometimes what the long-winded one was). Keep in mind that the visit can be a bit delayed, the 1:40 hours advertised with us was over 2 hours. Great value for money, but we also had to go to the other cave at 15:30. We went walking from the sun mountain cave to the north caves, this is about 20-25min 2km walk through the beautiful nature and a piece of the famous pieterpad. The advantage is that you do not have to look for a parking space at the caves North where in retrospect there were some spots available, but parking is paid here. In the afternoon we visited the caves North, here you see much the same as at the Zonneberg cave. The caves North are a bit older and here is the vault where the night watch was, book a ticket incl. the vault. Because we like to see the Museum in the Sun Mountain cave AND the vault in caves North Forests we booked both excursions. Otherwise, one of the two excuses would have been sufficient. We spent 4 hours underground and learned a lot about these caves and Maastricht. In the cave it is always 11 degrees so bring a vest. Possibly its own flashlight. The groups were not too big which was very nice. An improvement point is that the website is not very clear with everything that could be booked.

We have booked two impressive tours in succession on 15 February 2025. We started with the tour of the Caves North with our guide Hanny. You'll go over 100 feet underground through a crisscrossing passageway. It's 11 degrees with 98% humidity. She took the time to stand by the drawings, art and writings and talked extensively about them. She let you experience what it would be like without light and sound, very special because you will never experience that again!
Then we went to the caves Zonneberg to follow the tour by our guide Pierre. These caves are much higher and more organized because more professional limestone was extracted. It's quite a long way to go in this cave. Pierre told in a humorous way about the origin of the caves, history and even about the bats.
Both guides came already child/ten in the caves and could tell a lot! Thank you so much for this fantastic experience!

Had a very nice and educational tour, provided by Hannie. The enthusiasm and the pride in Maastricht splashed off. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to undertake a fun activity in Maastricht and also wants to learn a bit about the history of this beautiful city.

We did the art vault tour - our guide (first time running the vault tour) was fantastic and fun drawing on his background in standup comedy at Edinburgh (!). He always asked the group if we wanted more facts and we all kept saying yes so we were underground for nearly two hours!
My friend HATES guided tours and only tolerates them if you have to take a tour to get in. He came out saying how he thoroughly enjoyed it. There is no fixed route which added something special and slightly tailor made to our experience.
Highlight was the vault but the real gem was hearing how the caves changed over time.
Overall a very fun experience with a very professional set up. We booked online the day before for the 15.15 English tour.. Our tour started at the Fort which was a short and easy walk from the old town. At the meeting point they sold coffee/water and had a toilet so you can arrive a little early and relax before your tour.

It's the second time I have been there. Every time was different. It seems like each tour guide has their own route of showing things to the tourists and apparently they have their ways of explaining things which I appreciate. They showed us this wonderful historical site from their own perspective. Maastricht is a great city to visit, with all the festivals, activities as well as culture and history and this underground cave is definitely special and so different from other things you can experience in a popular city. I highly recommend it. It's about 30 minutes' walk from the train station and you can always book a tour on their website.

The tour was great.
Our guide WIM did the tour in English, but also incorporated German words.
He has a very good knowledge of geology and history and made us laugh with his subtle little gags.
It was fun.

We did the tour of the fort and the marl caves.
Wim gave the tour of the fort, a very educational tour about the history of Maastricht and the role of the fort in history. There wasn't a dull moment.
Ernest gave the tour of the marl caves. One of the funniest guides we've ever seen. He presents everything in a unique way and gives the tour in an educational manner.
We recommend it to everyone, young and old. Thank you Maastricht Underground for this experience

Today we took part in one of the most amazing man-made cave tours. Joanne our tour guide kept our group engaged from start to finish. We learned how the caves came into existence, farmers' unconventional and creative use of the caves, and WW2 historical events that included rescuing allies fighters and aiding Jewish people in escaping from the Nazis. We took the extended tour which included the art vaults. One has to hear the stories and simply be in awe in amazement at what lengths were taken to save those art treasures. A must-see tour.

The 1.5 hour city walk has been extended to 2 hours: very fascinating and pleasantly narrated by Guide Wim. Nice stories from personal experiences interspersed with the harsh reality of the past. Highly recommended!

It's the kind of place that a guide is essential, otherwise there is no way of understanding the centuries of history all around you. Our guide, mr. Wim, was both the most sympathetic and the most knowledgeable one could wish for. Definitely worth the tour of the fort and the caves.

Are the caves suitable for very young children (2 and 4 years old)? Which tour would be most appropriate/interesting for them? Thank you

Dogs are not allowed during public/regular tours, because are other guests who might be scared of or allergic to dogs. Dogs are, however, allowed during tours with a private guide and on city tours. Also service dogs and small dogs which are carried in a backpack are allowed.

I read about the underground tour and Wim as a very knowledgeable guide: where did you book the tour? What company?
Written July 6, 2019
We booked it on line through the Underground website.

It is at least a 1/2 hour to one hour enjoyable walk.

It is, we combined both tours and and I'm not sure if we started at 12:30 or 13:30 but with a small pause between the tours we ended up at 15:30. Both tours are quite easy to walk. The guides are very entertaining. It was our highlight in Maastrich.
