- Wanderer190332650704 contributionsGreat! We have already walked around the Sint Pietersberg and the Caestert Plateau and the ENCI quarry several times. Wonderful adventure. Now going underground as well. We chose the Zonneberg caves. We are shown around by an enthusiastic man named Charles. He jokes a lot so it is never boring listening to him. Learned a lot about the history of Maastricht. It's a pity that only basic guided tours are given after the autumn holidays. Because of this we miss the storage facility of the Nachtwacht. We also missed some photo opportunities. Despite that, we were still able to quickly take some photos, partly for our geocaching account. Nice experience!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 6, 2023
- HRiley10 contributionsDefinitely worth the tourTypically we don’t love doing group tours as we like to explore ourselves but this was well worth doing. Eric, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and charming. He explained the history and the wall carvings in great detail and it is clear he has a lot of passion for his job. This visit is a must on a bucket list of Maastricht.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 22, 2023
- Lorena de NicoloArnhem, The Netherlands29 contributionsFun and rich tourVery interesting experience! I was not expecting that much but the tour was really good! A lot of interesting information about how and why the caves were formed and our guide Wim was really nice! It’s worth the money! Also the cafe close by is a good option to have some warm tea after the tour! Don’t forget to bring some good jackets since it’s 11 degrees inside the caves!Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten November 27, 2023
- RDonaShenzhen, China46 contributionsWonder experience the visit to Maastricht underground.First, I would like to thank our tour guide, Willy. It was not a simple explanation of the site, but a fantastic experience and an excellent history of Maastricht's old times. I thoroughly recommend adding this the underground tour of your visit to Maastricht. I will be back to visit the fort, but due to lack of time, I could catch the tour in the same day.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten January 15, 2024
- Justīne ŠLatvia11 contributionsHad a great time, recommend to othersWeather outside was rainy so we decided to take a tour around caves. We had amazing guide (Paul) who had so interesting, funny and educational stories. Really enjoyed this tour and recommend to others. Maybe not the best choice if you’re claustrophobic or afraid of dark, otherwise worthy of title - best to do activity in the city.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten January 27, 2024

- Flower22225150 contributionsGreat tour of fort and cave with WillyWe did the English fort and cave tours. Our guide was Willy and he made the experience exceptional. We learned so much and in a very fun way. Willy kept our attention, was very friendly, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. The fort and cave are unique and interesting. Highly recommend this experience.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 10, 2024
- Iris RMullica Hill, New Jersey28 contributionsHidden TreasuresToday we took part in one of the most amazing man-made cave tours. Joanne our tour guide kept our group engaged from start to finish. We learned how the caves came into existence, farmers' unconventional and creative use of the caves, and WW2 historical events that included rescuing allies fighters and aiding Jewish people in escaping from the Nazis. We took the extended tour which included the art vaults. One has to hear the stories and simply be in awe in amazement at what lengths were taken to save those art treasures. A must-see tour.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten May 6, 2024
- Dan W3 contributionsHighlight of MaastrichtIt's the second time I have been there. Every time was different. It seems like each tour guide has their own route of showing things to the tourists and apparently they have their ways of explaining things which I appreciate. They showed us this wonderful historical site from their own perspective. Maastricht is a great city to visit, with all the festivals, activities as well as culture and history and this underground cave is definitely special and so different from other things you can experience in a popular city. I highly recommend it. It's about 30 minutes' walk from the train station and you can always book a tour on their website.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten May 12, 2024
- Richard PLondon, United Kingdom35 contributionsMy friend HATES guided tours but.....We did the art vault tour - our guide (first time running the vault tour) was fantastic and fun drawing on his background in standup comedy at Edinburgh (!). He always asked the group if we wanted more facts and we all kept saying yes so we were underground for nearly two hours! My friend HATES guided tours and only tolerates them if you have to take a tour to get in. He came out saying how he thoroughly enjoyed it. There is no fixed route which added something special and slightly tailor made to our experience. Highlight was the vault but the real gem was hearing how the caves changed over time. Overall a very fun experience with a very professional set up. We booked online the day before for the 15.15 English tour.. Our tour started at the Fort which was a short and easy walk from the old town. At the meeting point they sold coffee/water and had a toilet so you can arrive a little early and relax before your tour.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 30, 2024

We were on a tour in the Northern Caves with a tour guide called Gerard. A cool, friendly guy with interesting stories and a good sense of humour. Defenately worth a visit. The tour was €9.50 pp, that was a reasonable price. The tours are in small groups of 12 persons, that is a good size. Tickets can be bought on the internet, where you pick your time slot (1 hour tour), with tickets send as a pdf file to an email adress. You can then keep the tickets on your smart phone.

The Maastricht underground has been a pleasant surprise. You start the tour at the Fort and after 300 meters walk to reach the entrance. The day we visited was actually warm, but I had the good idea to bring my jacket with me, event if I did not know what to expect. And it was a good idea; once you enter the tunnels (human made), you start wandering at the light of torches in a place a constant 10 degrees and 90% humidity. The place is a labyrinth and w/o a light or a guide you could be lost until somebody is able to rescue you. It's almost a prank, but somebody planted some chicory in a small allotment to make advantage of the darkness and humidity. I normally hate guides, I prefer to follow my own pace, but our guide was very funny and engaging. Worthwhile to visit

We visited both the northern caves and the Zonneberg caves on the same day. Both tours were exciting and informative, and the caves looked very different from each other (for different reasons). The guides knew how to present the facts and stories in captivating ways. Still think we would recommend the northern caves first for people with children as it is more "cave" like. Would highly recommend both for anyone visiting the Maastricht area.

Our experience with our guide Willy was excellent. We visited both the Fort and the lime stone tunnels, and his stories were informative, entertaining and at a good pace. This tour, not far from the city centre, is definitely worth it.

The Maastricht caves are a very important location for the city, but also for the whole country, and maybe even the world.
In this place there is millions of years of history.
The rocks itself were used nationwide for building houses and making cement.
There have been several major historic discoveries like dinosaurs, drawings and other items.
The caves have played a major role in several wars, during which they were used as shelter, houses and escape routes during WW2.
Traces of battles, and escapes are left everywhere, most interesting beeing the huge crater left behind by French troops who tried to blow up the Fort Sint Pieter above, or the carved names of Jewish people escaping from Maastricht during the 2nd World War.
A fascinating place full of history, explained well. A very unique experience.

We chose the English tour of the North Caves. I took the tour two times, one last year and the other one, this year, but this time it was with a turn. We had the pleasure to have Ed as the guide. His jokes, his personality and the little trick during the tour made it a great experience. At some point it became a rollercoaster of emotions, in a good way I mean, everything was safe and we all returned well home afterwards. All the information Ed provided, plus the special beauty of the caves, stayed with us for a while after the tour ended. I definitely recommend this experience to anyone who would like to discover something else about Maastricht, besides its architecture, as there is so much more to see underneath. Many thanks to Ed.

Was a really good experience to see the historical architecture underground. We had a great guide, his name was Eric. When all LED lights are turned off, you have total darkness, it's insane how dark it is. He told us that without lights you will never be able to find the exit, as you would be walking in circles even when touching the wall. One can imagine you get easily lost there without any light. Above your head is 10 meters of stone, and another 30 meters of soil, and the humidity inside the cave system is very high, around 98%. Worth visting!

I attended both the Fort and North Cave tours in English — Jo was extremely kind, approachable and knowledgeable. Marion as well! they involved us by asking questions, guessing things or even hands on activities at times. It was super interactive and fun! I didn’t feel silly asking questions and they made the whole experience a 10/10. I will definitely come back again to visit the other cave, and highly recommend anyone interested to find out more to book the tours!

Are the caves suitable for very young children (2 and 4 years old)? Which tour would be most appropriate/interesting for them? Thank you

Dogs are not allowed during public/regular tours, because are other guests who might be scared of or allergic to dogs. Dogs are, however, allowed during tours with a private guide and on city tours. Also service dogs and small dogs which are carried in a backpack are allowed.

It is, we combined both tours and and I'm not sure if we started at 12:30 or 13:30 but with a small pause between the tours we ended up at 15:30. Both tours are quite easy to walk. The guides are very entertaining. It was our highlight in Maastrich.
