searching for a lost treasure

On this square around the city hall/opera, 'stopera' stalls are selling used stuff. wander through the market place and be lucky to find anything special.

As far as flea markets go, and we've been to many, many of them, this one for me was just OK. Clothing, food (like cheese, nuts, fruit, not much old stuff (what I like) and not much jewelry. So for me, this was not. Conveniently near the Amsterdam Music Theatre also Rembrandt House nearby.

A mix of souvenirs and used items the day I was there. I saw an earlier suggestion to find the guy with the leather bags. I found a guy from Kenya, selling leather bags from Kenya. I'm glad I did! It's a nice quality bag made with recycled leather. I'm sure I'll enjoy using it for years and it's a... More

Loads of stalls with different odds and ends, really enjoyed the stores with old relics and tools. Good selection of food on offer.

If you are a fan of flea markets, this is worth a visit. If you are not, then stop reading. Some of the stalls have the predictable souvenir tat - clog slippers, fridge magnets, tacky t-shirts etc. However there are some great finds if you have the inclination and patience. Trawling the stalls is a lovely way to spend a... More

I'm STILL enjoying my purchases from a summertime shopping bonanza at the Waterlooplein Market! The Market is outdoors, so best to plan your visit in pleasant weather. I was in the city on a day trip with some Dutch friends & they brought me to the market specifically to introduce me to "New Rock Boots". They're a brand of amazing... More

This is one of the best flea markets I have ever seen! They have all kinds of hippie stuff, stuff I've never seen before, vintage, second hand and the cliche souvenirs.. And the best of all: it's not expensive. Prices are fine so it's the perfect place to buy some original souvenirs. In the winter, it's ok but in summer... More

Waterlooplein has one of the largest flea markets in Amsterdam. There is everything from used clothing at incredibly low prices to boxes and boxes of vinyl records, accessories for bicycles, new clothes like leather coats, new watches and much much more. It's worth a look and there's lots to look at.

Heard so much about this flea market and saw it listed on the official Amsterdam tourism website, so i had high expectations. Got there and was very, very disappointed! it felt like a royal waste of time. There was not that much to see or buy, and the souvenirs/knick knacks were not unique or any different from what you would... More

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighbourhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
