The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.

- Alexandra AAthens, Greece4 contributionsExcellent!Amazing museum! We loved the recorded audio tour, which allows you to go at your own pace, highlighting the highlights as you go. We saw many amazing works (although my 2 favorites were missing, starry night & cafe terrace at night). An absolute must when you are in Amsterdam!Thank you for your positive review! The Starry Night was acquired by the MoMa in New York in 1941. Many of his self-portraits can be found at our museum such as Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat or Self-Portrait as Painter. - Adrian GLondon, United Kingdom14 contributionsWell worth a visit.Sensibly, the number of visitors to the museum is capped, so you really need to book online, in advance. It does get busy, but you can see & read the exhibits, and it's not what we would call overcrowded. The audio tour is good value & very informative, giving you a good insight into Vincent's life, influences & works. We left with a vastly improved knowledge & understanding.Thank you for your review. - dizzyb31,464 contributionsA great place!A great place to find out about one of my favourite artists and view his paintings. The museum was busy on the Sunday afternoon we'd pre-booked tickets for but still allowed us plenty of space and time to enjoy the exhibits. It's a shame there was no starry night on display and no mention of it either.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 19, 2024
- bookdeaverWashington, United Kingdom30 contributionsWell worth a visitGot to the museum easily by tram. Book tickets in advance to ensure entry. You queue up outside the museum at your designated entry time. Didn’t have to queue long but take a waterproof or umbrella if weather is not good. Bag security check inside. Audio guide available. We didn’t use the audio guide and found walking around the museum and reading information available sufficient to learn a lot more about the artist works and his life. We were a lot more informed by the time we left. We really enjoyed our time at this museum. Our time slot was about 16.15. Unfortunately though, we didn’t have time to have a good look round the gift shop. Toilets available, lifts to all floors, timed entry ensured the museum wasn’t crowded. Free lockers also available. Don’t know if there was a cafe in the museum but there is one close by.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 21, 2024

Wonderful to see so many young people inside the museum with paper and pencils donated by the museum to reproduce the paintings.. free children's activities organized by the museum.. - Brandon D20 contributionsA bit pricy, but worth the visit! This museum is well worth a visit. It has 100’s of paintings by Van Gough and other fellow artists, which make-up a fabulous display of art. I would recommend buying an audio tour to accompany your visit. It’s not mandatory, but it does a really good job of telling you Van Gough’s life, which gives you a greater appreciation of the art on display. I do think the tickets are quite pricy €22 each and an additional €3.50 for the audio tour. Also, this museum doesn’t have all of the collection - there are still a few famous paintings that are housed in other galleries around the world (e.g ‘Starry Night’). However, this is still a brilliant collection and I would highly recommend for your visit to Amsterdam!Thank you for your elaborate and positive feedback, we hope to welcome you again in the future!Written March 4, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 28, 2024

- Gianluca BRome, Italy155 contributionsVan Gogh, how much beauty!!!A must have!!! You can't miss a visit to the Van Gogh Museum if you are in Amsterdam. I am not an art expert, far from it, but I can guarantee you that you will be enchanted by Van Gogh's paintings and the story behind each of them. I suggest booking the visit with the audio guide, with a cost of only €2.50 more. Upon your arrival, you will receive an electronic device and headphones that you can set in your language and pause in front of the individual works and listen to the story behind them (this applies to around ninety works, marked with the audio guide symbol). Advance booking is a must, otherwise it is impossible to find a place for the same day or for subsequent ones. The arrival time must be selected when booking, if you arrive late, the structure does not guarantee access.Thank you for the positive recommendation!Written March 8, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 4, 2024

Museum dedicated to the aforementioned artist. Came here and bought tickets in advance online. I’d highly recommend buying in advance because tickets were sold out even at 9am, at opening. We took the tram here and waited outside a bit before going in. They have free lockers to place your belongings as you’re not allowed to have backpacks while walking through the exhibits. It was nice to get an in-depth look into the inspirations behind the art, and life of Van Gogh. There’s free floors and there was another exhibit that focused on another artist that paralleled Van Gogh. We spent two and a half hours there, and I think that was a good amount of time to view everything. I’d highly recommend coming here if you like art and/or it’s your first time in Amsterdam.

We booked our tickets online approximately a week before our visit, which was smart because it was sold out the day that we visited otherwise. We recommend visiting first thing when the museum opens to avoid the crowds. This museum has lots of great art as well as tells the story of VanGogh's life. His famous Sunflowers painting is here as well as his last unfinished painting before his death. Plan for a couple of hours for this museum. I was expecting to not enjoy this museum thinking it would be too much of the same thing over and over, but I found it quite enjoyable and enjoyed the descriptions and narrative of his life along the way.

I love Van Gogh, so I was really looking forward to this museum. All of Van Gogh's works gathered together is a spectacular sight, something you would never see in Japan.
I made a reservation through the Museumkaart slot, so I was able to enter without waiting. It was very crowded that day, so I probably wouldn't have been able to enter without a reservation, but reservations are required for this museum and the Anne Frank House.
Museumkaart is recommended for those who are going to more than five expensive museums, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis. The best thing about it is that you can make a reservation for free through the Museumkaart slot. I wrote about that in my review of the Anne Frank House, so I won't go into it here.
The Rijksmuseum is located right next to the Van Gogh Museum, so I think it would be efficient to go there together.
It's a bit difficult to get to, but the Kröller-Müller Museum, about an hour by train from Utrecht, also has Van Gogh's masterpieces, and I recommend it.
Photography is prohibited at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, but you could take photos at the Kröller-Müller Museum.
As for access, it is very convenient to use the tram in Amsterdam.
Tram tickets can be purchased from the automatic ticket vending machine in Amsterdam Station, the GVB center in front of Amsterdam Station, and also in the rear cars of the tram, although I don't know the type.
I bought a one-day ticket (1dayticket) for 9€ at the blue GVB automatic ticket vending machine in the station, and in that case, ① select English from the language below, ② Buy disposable GVB chipcard, ③ GVB24hrs/1day, ④ the number of tickets, and then select the credit card, and then receive a receipt.
The ticket is a blue, hard card the size of a business card, and ① when you get on the tram, you touch it to the card reader next to the entrance (one sound), ② look at the information display inside the tram, and press the get off button before getting off (same as a one-man bus in Japan), and ③ when you get off the tram, you touch it to the card reader next to the exit (two sounds). (If you forget this, you won't be able to get on the next tram, so be careful.)

Most guidance you find about this museum is to go early or late. We purchased tix for the first entry time slot at 9am. There was a lengthy line that started building around 830am, but it moved fast once doors opened.
There are free lockers to put modest size backpacks, coats, umbrellas, etc. No luggage storage. The website has a great FAQ.
You can get through the museum in 75 to 90 minutes. 60 if you had to. Or you can linger on. Crowds at that time we're spaced out enough, but I think it would be quite crowded at mid morning thru afternoon.
A worthwhile visit, especially if you can get there early.

To visit here, you should plan to make your online reservation well in advance. I do not know how early this place sells out, but I think it was sold out by the time we visited on a Monday early afternoon. I bought tickets online about 3 months in advance. While we were in line, a couple was ahead of us and they got turned away as their tickets were for some other museum (the staff guy said it was 20 minutes away) - so, I have no idea where they were trying to go, but be sure it's the right venue.
The museum is located on the edge of a large open park. From above looking down as if on a clock face, the Van Gogh Museum is at around "8 p.m." while the Rijksmuseum is on the top edge of the park at "midnight". They are only about a 5-minute walk apart. I think there is a parking garage under this open park space, but that is only based on seeing an entrance that sloped down. We were on foot or taking the tram. At least 2 tram lines run along the edge of the park, so you can get from there to the Central Station on the tram in about 15 - 20 minutes. You just need a tap-to-pay credit card to access the trams (though you can buy a card pass also).
You enter the museum in a mostly glass-walled building and have the tickets scanned. You then descend a level to an airy atrium where you store backpacks in a self-service locker area. It asks you to choose a 6-digit passcode (it suggests your birthdate) and an icon from a list (telephone, camera, sun, etc.). It makes you repeat those back, then it tells you your locker #. You store stuff there and push to lock it. Then you have to give the code + icon later to retrieve things. I'd recommend taking a photo of your locker's # to help.
This area also filled with soft benches to wait on people, the gift shop, the restroom, and the desk where you get audio guides. I found the audio guide useful and thought it was worth having.
You then ascend an escalator to an adjacent building which houses the paintings (and another couple of gift shops). The presentation is chronological, but also has other things interspersed (letters, works by another contemporary artist, some history to put a work or period in context, etc.).
You ascend through a second floor which has a large number of works, including several famous paintings (sunflowers, Van Gogh's bedroom).
The top floor focuses on some of Van Gogh's later paintings, including the wheat field with crows (which I learned was not actually his final work). We spent around 2 hours here, but you could easily stay longer.
This museum was one of my favorite stops on our trip. I thought they did an excellent job of presenting the works, lighting them well for display, and providing good context without intruding on the focus of your visit. I would highly recommend a visit here if you have any interest in Van Gogh's work.

The collection is excellent though his most famous piece, Starry Night, isn’t here. The museum is organized nicely and does a great job of telling the story and history of VVG.
Recommend buying the audio guide and buying tickets ahead of time for the first slot in the morning. We came at 10:30 on a Tuesday in April, and it was very crowded. So crowded that it impacted our enjoyment.
You will be bumped, and you will get frustrated by the number of private tours talking loudly in front of the paintings. This isn’t a place for a leisurely, contemplative stroll.

A small but very complete museum. A true journey about the life of this genius of painting, who lived only 37 years and gained worldwide fame only after his death. I recommend the visit and reservation of at least 3 hours to know the main works of the permanent exhibition. There is paid audio guide separately for those interested.

You need to book tickets in advance. We tried to book tickets on our phone and the process failed 3x. A museum staffer told us to book one of the free options to reserve a time slot, then pay upon arrival. You'll see zero-cost options on the ticket page. Choose one of those options for the correct quantity you need. Then once inside the museum, go to the counter to pay. Easy peasy.
We booked a 7pm entry time. We got there early (6:30) but they let us in without question.
The audio guide was worth purchasing, especially since the museum was crowded, making it difficult at times to get up close to the information cards on the walls.
The museum is easy to navigate and offers a FEW places to sit (why are museums so stingy about seating?).

I booked the visit with entry at 2.30pm months in advance, believing I had time until 6pm, the museum's closing time, to admire the works. Instead, from 4.00 pm a series of pressing announcements began, annoyingly repeated every 10 minutes, with a countdown of the remaining time, communicating the early closing of the museum at 5.00 pm. When I asked the staff for explanations about the reasons for the early closure, they reported that VIPs had paid to have exclusive access to the museum. With entry at 2.30pm, in their opinion there was more than enough time to make the visit. We were escorted to the exit at 4.50 pm in a hasty manner. Van Gogh's ideal was to paint for posterity, as repeated several times by the audio guide; the ideal of the museum management would seem to distinguish between common posterity and VIP posterity!
However, the works on display are extraordinary.

This was my third visit to the Van Gogh Museum, but the first time back in 20 years. It is still just as enjoyable as I remember - though FAR more crowded. We visited in late May and had purchased our tickets about 6 weeks in advance and had plenty of times/days to choose from. We did see several people who had not pre-purchased their tickets, get turned away as the museum was sold out for the day (we visited on a Sunday morning).
I had read a few recommendations (maybe in the TA forums?) to start the visit on the top floor and work your way down to try to avoid the worst of the crowds. We arrived about an hour after opening and I'm not sure that starting at the top made any difference in crowd size. Since the museum is laid out in chronological order, you may want to stick to the traditional bottom to top path if it's your first time visiting or want to see the evolution of Van Gogh's work.
While I thought I was prepared for the crowds, I was not prepared for the amount of jostling from people trying to take photos of the artwork or selfies with the artwork. It makes sense to me if you see a piece that you really like, that you want to make sure you remember (and remember the name), but many people just seemed to be taking photos of each piece as if they were checking off a list. Despite the crowds, the artwork is superb and you can get close enough to really examine the brush strokes. There was a special exhibition of paintings by Matthew Wong while we were visiting, and all of us enjoyed seeing his work very much (a few Van Gogh's were sprinkled throughout that part of the gallery as well). A word of note, in case you're not aware, Starry Night is not in this museum, but can be found in New York at the Museum of Modern Art.
I would highly recommend making sure you visit this museum if you are in Amsterdam!

Grazie

Using the teams here is very easy. Just swipe a credit card to enter and swipe again when you get off! Get a map that shows the routes and you are good to go.

Hello everybody! I did not manage to book a time slot for Van Gogh museum for my period of stay in Amsterdam. And now all the tickets for next 2-3 weeks are gone. I wonder if it is possible to enter by the live queue. Any experience or advice on this? Thanks in advance!
