About
Hidden in the heart of the city centre of Amsterdam is a small wonder: Our Lord in the Attic Museum. Visitors will be going on a journey in a unique well-preserved canal house from the 17th century. Narrow corridors and stairs lead to historically decorated living quarters, kitchens and bedsteads, ending in what is literally the highlight of the museum: a complete church in the attic.

    Extraordinary Church in an Attic
Stunning, full size church built in an attic built during the Dutch Reformation when Catholicism was banned. Preserved, beautiful, and full of original items for worship. It was an amazing afternoon. The private tour guide was extremely well versed and interesting.

    Innovative Response to Access Challenge
A fascinating museum unlike anything I have seen elsewhere. I must specially commend the provision for disabled visitors. Like many old buildings, it has proved difficult to provide access. Rather than give up, they provide a “covisit” facility; whereby a companion explores the museum guided by the disabled visitor, maintaining full audio/visual contact. I have never encountered this before. It was an innovative response to an impossible situation and allowed us to explore together. Frankly it was tremendous fun. I wish others were as innovative.

    Second oldest museum in Amsterdam
Original 1600s house with its little changed interiors. Entry via next door house with modern facilities. Basement floor links to the old house which has six floors. The top 3 floors contain the hidden Catholic church, the bottom 3 floors used by the family. We spent longer than the 1 hour visit we anticipated. Free audio tour, some original narrow wooden staircases to negotiate.

    Charming and atmospheric
This is a little diamond that might be missed by visitors hurrying through the city. The house is really lovely and delivers a real idea of life for a well off family living by the canals. The church itself is breathtaking despite its small size. Thanks to the brilliant staff. Included on the IamAmsterdam card, it should not be missed.

    Very interesting ..
.. that Catholics had to hide (= not display) their churches at one time. Lovely church but doesn't take long to go around and if you don't have e.g. an IAmsterdam card at 16 Euros is quite expensive.

    Lovely museum - very interesting
Really interesting and well presented museum. Very friendly staff on the front desk. The entrance is in an adjacent property and after watching a short film you walk through to the house below street level. The house itself is intersting to see although quite empty but the church is stunning. Really good audio guide once you've worked out how to use it (there were pictures to show you but we couldn't quite understand it).

Definitely worth an hour of your time!
Recommended by a work colleague and really glad we took the recommendation. Interesting to learn some history and see how the Dutch lived in times past. Excellently preserved. Very friendly and helpful staff.

    Worth seeing
First, obviously, be sure to look for the signs that say Museum Ons'Lieve Heer Op Solder and not expect to see it in English “Our Lord in the Attic” otherwise you will walk right past it. The front entrance appears modern but you quickly enter and “step back in time”. It is very interesting to see the inside of the house and then the church and one realizes the depth of faith to continue to practice their religion. Plan to spend an hour or so…

    Unique historical museum
Although Amsterdam has several world class museums, this was my favorite museum because it captures such a unique period of history. It is the only remaining hidden Catholic Church of the ~21 that existed when Catholics were prohibited from worshipping openly. I was struck by the ingenuity of the architects who built the church across the attics of three houses. When inside the church don’t miss the video showing the hidden pulpit.

    Fascinating story
This was a fascinating and well presented museum. A simple audio device that you could activate at various points along the tour told you all the details and I noticed there was a separate children's one. It is spread over several floors up and down lots of narrow stairs but lots of people of all ages were managing fine. Really interesting place to visit.

Visited late on Sunday night with my wife, and we throughly enjoyed the history of the house and were amazed at the Catholic Church in the attic.

Definitely recommend everyone who visits Amsterdam to go here.

Extremely interesting! It is definitely worth the visit!!! Not only do you see the church in the attic, but you visit various rooms in the home that display the way of life at that time. Highly recommend. It is something quite different.

One of the most interesting sites we visited in Amsterdam. I had no idea about the history behind this church. It was a wonderful history lesson

This museum is a hidden gem. It is a home that is hundreds of years old, which hid a secret Catholic chapel in it’s attic. You will receive a small recorder in your language which corresponds to displays in every room. Point and listen. The history of traditions and customs is fascinating. There are artifacts from secular living of families who lived there, as well as sacred spaces. Please know that there are lots of little rooms to investigate, and some stairs are more like ladders, but original to the home. Free lockers and a coat room are also provided.

Historic Catholic Church built 250 years ago on top of three homes on the canal. The exhibits are superb and the church itself is mesmerizing. An audio tour takes you through the history and background. I found this fascinating…. Takes st least one hour with many narrow and difficult staircases

An interesting part of History when Catholic Churches (and worshippers) had to keep out of sight. Hence many ‘churches’ were ‘built’ in the houses… and this one was built in the attic across three houses. The whole place is wonderfully recreated with the splendid Church in the Attic…
Very informative audio and do watch the the mini videos..

A very well set out canal house museum. It is lit in such a way as to recreate how the house would’ve been in the living areas, basically not light at all.
The church in the attic is quite staggering in terms the effort gone to in creating it.
Some excellent views across the city from the higher windows.
Do use the audio guide and take the time to sit and go through the short 3 min introduction as well as looking at the model of the house.
Well worth the visit.

I was hesitating whether to visit or not, and didn't know what to expect. So glad that we did. The visit takes roughly an hour, and there's a lot to take in from history, culture and religion. The place is very well preserved, and definitely worth the time!

This was so interesting. I had not heard of it until we were in Amsterdam. Amazing that these Catholic churches existed in houses. The mind boggles how it was built. Would recommend.

A vivid reminder of how worship services find a way to continue even when banned. Very interesting and an excellent audio program.
