An imposing and vitally historic building yes...but as a piece of curatorship, this is very poor. Whether or not one is of the Jewish faith, one expects more inclusion historically as to its social pertinence and frankly what is being ‘shared’. One was left with...More

The Portuguese Synagogue is a really impressive building that is just so good to view. The Portuguese Synagogue ,aka as the Esnoga or the Snoge is a great building that has some serious history attached to it. Constructed between 1671 and 1675 this synagogue was...More

A genuine untouched Jewish gem. Breathtaking inside this gigantic edifice which does not have a single electric lightbulb. The entry ticket includes a visit to the Jewish museum - well presented introduction to Jewish prayer houses and customs and rituals. Also a good Jewish history...More

I really didn't know what to expect about this place, mostly because I've never been to a synagogue in my life. But this place was so spiritual and you can feel a lot of history in between those walls. Also, the crew was really welcoming....More

Imagine a vibrant Jewish community before the Holocaust. See the museum of its art and artifacts below ground on site. Enter the century+ old synagogue, still run on candle power and feel the past come alive. Then remember what happened to the Jews of Amsterdam....More

Accessible as part of the Jewish Heritage ticket package and iAmsterdam card deal. Large, beautiful building, but plenty of details to study. Excellent audio guide, with many info points, and extra details available at each point. Sobering to think how full this synagogue would have...More

The synagogue is part of the Jewish cultural center tour...the synagogue is kept as it was when built..no electricity and no heat..the magnificent structure can be enjoyed as built..the only modern intrusion is the audio guide spots...you really get the feel of the place.

A very interesting synagogue. Very old and the structure is very typical a Sfaradi synagoge. Interesting place to visit to see and understand the history of this community in Amsterdam
