The Zuiderkerk ("southern church") is an early 17th-century Protestant church in the Nieuwmarkt area, the city's first church built specifically for Protestant services. It is one of my favourite areas of the city, and the church is a jewel in the crown. The design of the church in Amsterdam Renaissance style is by Hendrick de Keyser, who was also buried... More

I could only admire this church from the exterior, a sign on the door states that tours are now closed for the church. It's a pleasant location tucked away where there are fewer tourists. Great for some photos and a pleasant stroll around the perimeter.

I recently went with a group to Amsterdam and this was on my list of places to see as I was unsure if I was going to be able to get to Westerkerk on time, in queue, to climb up the bell tower. This church is no longer open to the public. It is an events center that allows rentals... More

This church is beautiful and I guarantee it is the most prettiest place to take a picture in Amsterdam! The towers is precisely in the middle of the canal, making the picture looks like a postcard. Highly recommended!

This church is the older, smaller version of the Westerkerk. This bell tower is smaller than the Westerkerk but I think the tour more interesting. You can only visit as part of the guided tour - cost €7.50, and you need to leave all bags at the bottom and you should definitely have flat shoes. The stairs are very steep and... More

The Zuiderkerk was the first church in amsterdam for Protestant services. The building has not been used as a church anymore but has been put to various other uses throughout the years, as an information centre , exhibition or you can hire it for private event such as congress, wedding or reception. Actually when you visit this church, you come... More

Last Saturday has been 'open tower day' in Amsterdam, and many tall buildings were freely accesible for the public to enjoy the view from above over the city centre. Normally you pay 7 euro for a tour. Groups can be maximum 15 persons to enter the tower. A skilful guide tells you about the building, the carillon, the bells. Finally,... More

Staying in Centrum

Neighbourhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
